The legendary author and activist Howard Zinn passed away yesterday at the age of 87. In one of his final interviews, Professor Zinn discussed how he would like to be remembered: ” I guess if I want to be remembered for anything, it’s for introducing a different way of thinking about the world, about war, about human rights, about equality, for getting more and more people to think that way.

Also, for getting more people to realize that the power which rests so far in the hands of people with wealth and guns, that the power ultimately rests in people themselves and that they can use it. At certain points in history, they have used it. Black people in the South used it. People in the women’s movement used it. People in the anti-war movement used it. People in other countries who have overthrown tyrannies have used it.

I want to be remembered as somebody who gave people a feeling of hope and power that they didn’t have before.”
When asked about his philosophy he said: “I believe, I suppose, in what could be called democratic socialism. I believe that we need a society where the motive for the economic system is not corporate profit, but the motive is the welfare of people, health care, jobs, child care, and so on. But that is dominant. Where there is a greater equalization of wealth and a society which is peaceful, which devotes its resources to helping people in the country and elsewhere.

I believe in a world where war is no longer the recourse for the settling of grievances and problems. I believe in the wiping out of national boundaries.

I don’t believe in visas and passports and immigration quotas. I think we need to move toward a global society. They use the word “globalization,” but they use it in a very narrow sense to mean the freedom of corporations to move across boundaries. But what we need is a freedom of people and things to move across boundaries.
When I talk about socialism in our jails, I mean greater societal intervention into the economy, but without deprivation of civil liberties. Dalton Trumbo, the Hollywood writer, put it very simply. He said, “Socialism without jails.”

"Yes, dissent and protest are divisive, but in a good way, because they represent accurately the real divisions in society. Those divisions exist - the rich, the poor - whether there is dissent or not, but when there is no dissent, there is no change. The dissent has the possibility not of ending the division in society, but of changing the reality of the division. Changing the balance of power on behalf of the poor and the oppressed."

"Let's talk about socialism. ... I think it's very important to bring back the idea of socialism into the national discussion to where it was at the turn of the [last] century before the Soviet Union gave it a bad name. Socialism had a good name in this country. Socialism had Eugene Debs. It had Clarence Darrow. It had Mother Jones. It had Emma Goldman. It had several million people reading socialist newspapers around the country... Socialism basically said, hey, let's have a kinder, gentler society. Let's share things. Let's have an economic system that produces things not because they're profitable for some corporation, but produces things that people need. People should not be retreating from the word socialism because you have to go beyond capitalism."

Agitate. Agitate. Agitate. But never lose your sense of humor in the process.

I dedicate this Rave to Red State Guy, who could learn a lot from Howard's teachings. (You would probably like him although diametrically opposed in all ideas. Howard never got angry)

Well, so far, what I read, this guy was a fool.
24 months ago: Al.

Please tell me one thing. Just one thing.

Name one place in the wide, wide world where socialism worked.

Please tell me that.

(I know the answer.)
24 months ago: And Al. I'll bet you and I would be the best of friends.

Sorry, dead activist dude.

Red you asked for socialist countries. In a recent report on the best places to live, Denmark, Finland,and the Netherlands are rated 1,2, and 3. Norway and Sweden are also up in the list. All of these are what you and Howard would consider Socialist countries, because they have centralized government programs to care for the people. Yet they are democracies. The US didn't even make the top 10 of the happiest places to live. * Denmark - 92.3
* Finland - 85.9
* Netherlands - 85.1
* Sweden - 82.7
* Ireland - 81.1
* Canada - 78.0
* Switzerland - 77.4
* New Zealand - 76.7
* Norway - 76.5
* Belgium - 76.3

24 months ago: Thanks Al.

I asked for places where socialism succeeded. Those you named aren't exactly leading the world in anything. Are they?

And those "rating" those countries as best or happiest places to live are probably the same people that give out that Nobel Piece Prize.
24 months ago: Is it now to be a happiness ranking system?

Red, don't even look at where your state is listed as opposed to Al's. Matter of fact don't even look at the bottome of the list to see the most unhappy states in America.

One of the things they said is that if you advertise a state as being nice, everyone moves there, and then it aint so nice anymore. For the past 20 years Californians have been moving to Oregon, raising prices and making it congested. One factor is Oregon is rainy all winter and folk get depressed never seeing the sun.
On the other hand I like being in sunny SoCal with blue skies and 70 degree temps while the rest of the country is below zero and stormy. I like this snow bird stuff. Oregon in summer when it is perfect and SoCal in winter.
I don't understand Florida or Louisiana being tops with all the hurricanes and bugs, course there are a lot of old folk in Florida and they are much happier than young folk because as they get older they forget all the miserable times and just remember the good times.

Socialism works here every single day in the United States. Taxes is a form of socialism and if you know a country that works without them, let me know.

Now you may teeter on the concept of "working," which is completely subjective. But you don't touch the outside world before the state has not "worked" for you. Your word socialism is nothing scary, you were just taught such and you will continue trying to scare those around you by acting like it is a harmful tactic deployed by the government.

24 months ago: Net.

The word "Socialism" is too absolutely scary and absolutely harmful. It is very, very bad.

What do you think made this country so great? The government?

What do you think is causing this country's decline? Individuals?

Taxes are a fact of life. I agree. Lower taxes are better than higher taxes. Socialism is the belief that government knows how to spend our money best. Freedom and capitalism is the belief I know what is best to spend MY money on.

Capitalists are not "taught". Capitalists "learn".

Never studied the Constitution, have you?

The founding fathers set up the system to guard against socialism and tyranny.

FDR through Obama are tearing down that system.

Wake up man.
24 months ago: Al, maybe they moved from New York to Florida.
I too was questioning the Lousiana thing. However, since your federal government has poured hundreds upon hundreds of billions of dollars into Louisana after the New Orleans fish bowl drowning by Katrina I guess they would be happy spending your money.

24 months ago: Red, the framers of the Constitution placed six reasons for having the government, including providing for the general welfare of the public. The government wasn't just made to support the military.

Any time any government provides for the welfare of the people it is socialism. Some governments just do a better job of it than others. All communists are socialists, but not all socialists are communists.

Do you consider all of the Scandinavian countries to be failures? By what criteria? They certainly have stronger economies and higher employment than we do.
24 months ago: Simply WRONG.
24 months ago: Al, not meaning harm, you really need to learn about the founding of this country and it's documents before you rail like someone from Venezuela.

24 months ago: Al.

Didn't major in history, did you?

You are dead wrong. The framers drew up the Constitution to limit government. PERIOD.

Cypress:

We're doomed.
24 months ago: RED, You know what is really sad? It is the stupid confederates that are trying to save the Union. Think about that fact. All of the north and the left coast are trying to move the country into a fascist state. It is mind blowing how the CSA is now the defenders of the Constitution and the U.S.

Wait until Box chimes in.

24 months ago: There is nothing wrong with Capitalisim. Social programs are only helpful to an extent. People need insentives to change their unhappy estates in life and those insentives are money but if you hand it out then eventually the money will runout and people will be just as miserable but give them an honest pay for a job well done and now we are getting somewhere!
