I've figured it out.

At first, I looked for some logical consistency on the extreme right-wing's attacks on President Obama. Way back during the campaign, when the accusations of communism first surfaced, I shrugged my shoulders and figured it was just a resurgence of the old liberal=socialist=communist name calling of the '80s. I didn't figure anyone actually believed it. When the birthers started making noise, I figured it would quickly be dismissed as rampant stupidity among an extreme fringe group. When it came right down to it, I thought the majority of the national discourse after the election would be on genuine policy disagreements.

Boy, was I wrong. You see, there is literally nothing a Democrat can do right. Nothing.

If he calls for health care reform, then any end-of-life provisions in it once Congress has written it up *must* be death panels and euthanasia. Who cares if they were bipartisan, and match an existing section of Medicare amended in 2003 by Republicans? It's evil and has to be stopped. Because he's a Democrat.

If he puts together a speech for kids in school, it's an evil attempt to indoctrinate and brainwash them into supporting his socialist agenda. Who cares if every President in recent history has made similar "stay in school" speeches, including Bush Sr. in 1992, just before the campaign? It's evil and has to be stopped. Because he's a Democrat.

If he [INSERT ACTION], [INSERT WHAT IT "REALLY" IS]. Who cares if [INSERT OBVIOUS MITIGATING FACTOR]? It's evil and has to be stopped. Because he's a Democrat.

And the thing is, it really doesn't matter what he does or doesn't do, because logic has nothing to do with this. If someone had proposed a school speech and he'd said no, the group of people currently attacking him for it would be attacking him for ignoring the children. If the health care bill didn't have end-of-life care in it, he'd be getting attacked for ignoring the concerns of senior citizens. Absolutely, positively everything and anything he ever does or says until he is out of office must be taken as an attack on Mom, apple pie, and America itself, regardless of logic and reason, because he belongs to the wrong party and is therefore the greatest and most dire threat ever faced by our nation. What he does and what he says makes no difference whatsoever. He is inherently evil. The only good action he is capable of taking is resigning. That is what the forum gun-toting and screaming, the Nazi/communist accusations, and the birther insanity are really all about.

Please... Someone prove me wrong. Attack a policy or decision of his using reason and logic. Reject the idiocy of death panel claims, of supposed indoctrination. Reject the uneducated and downright stupid claims of communism and Nazism. Reject birtherism and other fear tactics. Debate what he does and says in reality, not what your imagination tells you is the unspoken goal of a secret communist Nazi atheist Muslim foreign born grandma-murdering monster who wants to take away your guns. Feel free to use the comments below.

But if you can't find even one reality-based reason to criticize him, then don't bother. Because I've already figured it out.

Off by a few years. Not since 1989 when President George H. W. Bush made his address to students on the dangers of using drugs has a president spoken directly to the nation's students.

What is Obama going to discuss with our children? Don't you think we have a right in the decision? Why is he asking for essays or talking point evaluations?

29 months ago: Sorry, we were both wrong 1991.

Followed by...

What was the response at the time? The wonders of the Internet allow us to travel back in time and take a look.

News stories from the period show that Democrats were much less than pleased with the speech. Among the complaints, House Majority Leader Dick Gephardt said,

“The Department of Education should not be producing paid political advertising for the president, it should be helping us to produce smarter students. And the president should be doing more about education than saying, ‘Lights, camera, action.’ “
29 months ago: Sadly the problem is on both sides. We are not pulling together, we are pulling the country apart.

I was a life long Republican, I have some disagreements with Obama, but the behavior of the extremist right makes a joke out of the concerns some of us have. I am not at all represented by the Republican party.

I hope a strong leader does emerge. I have no political party at the moment so I'd join. I don't care about "parties" I want what is best for the country. For example I loved Clinton. I even voted for him in the second term, he did a great job.

It is easy to point the rabid right cause they are just acting insane. But the left can be just as reactionary. Both sides need to look at themselves, instead of bashing and dismissing the concerns of the opposing view. I don't see it happening sadly.

29 months ago: You people want to allow your children to watch him...OK by me. It's your right. Get off your high and mighty, your poop doesn't stink, mindset. Drop that line of "what will happen if they don't come around" to our thinking. It is a boatload of rotten fish. What really scares you is the fact that so few that can effect so many. However, that would be correct if we really were so few. That is in fact the biggest flaw in your theory. You really don't know what your up against and it really scares you. You should be concerned. It is coming to a head.

Compare that Gephardt quote to the screaming lunacy about socialist indoctrination going around. Gephardt leveled a mild criticism of the content of Bush's speech. You, however, have already demonstrated you don't care *what* he says, he's automatically evil for saying it. You're exactly the kind of person I described above.

Again, attack him for something substantive, please. Not what you imagine he is going to say in a speech he hasn't given yet.

29 months ago: And actually, the questions for after the speech have been distributed to schools across the nation.

Critics are particularly upset about lesson plans the administration created to accompany the speech. The lesson plans, available online, originally recommended having students "write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president."

The White House revised the plans Wednesday to say students could "write letters to themselves about how they can achieve their short-term and long-term education goals."

"That was inartfully worded, and we corrected it," White House deputy policy director Heather Higginbottom said.

The only possible conclusion I can reach is that the premise of my rant is correct. In your eyes, he is literally incapable of doing anything right, because he's a member of the wrong party. Therefore, everything he does is inherently wrong.

That's not a political stance. That's a psychosis.

29 months ago: Ah! Oh, thank you, OOTB! I missed that, in all the hypno-babble. Yes, that's a real, bona fide issue. And frankly, it's a disappointing one, considering his other energy policies. Loaning money to a foreign oil company isn't going to solve our energy issues, and I'm dead-set against offshore drilling as an environmental catastrophe waiting to happen.

The Soros connection is also sketchy, although I should point out that Soros dumped most of his shares in Petrobras a few weeks ago: http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601014&sid=aOJMyM_rVnv8

Soros bought 5.8 million of the company’s U.S.-traded preferred shares.

Soros is taking advantage of the spread between the two types of U.S.-listed Petrobras shares, said Luis Maizel, president of LM Capital Group LLC, which manages about $4 billion. The common shares were 21 percent more expensive than preferred today, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

“He knows he held a voting right in the common shares that would never translate to actual power,” Maizel said in an interview from San Francisco. “He’s just playing the spread.”

Petrobras preferred shares have also a 10 percent additional dividend, said William Landers, a senior portfolio manager for Latin America at Blackrock Inc."

In other words, his hedge fund company sold 22 million common shares, worthless in a power play, but George personally bought 5.6 million preferred shares, which would give him voting rights in the company.

And it isn't a loan, it is an investment.

Brazil moves to tighten control over oil wealth

Under proposed law, Petrobras would be sole operator of deep-sea fields, retain 30 per cent stake in new projects.

But critics say the changes inject too much political influence into Brazil's successful oil industry. The oil wealth is likely to be used as a major plank in Mr. da Silva's campaign to get his chief of staff Dilma Rousseff elected as his successor in October, 2010, elections.

The proposal gives an “absurd amount of power” to a cabinet level energy commission that could open the door to political interference in operational decisions, said Marilda Rosado, a Rio de Janeiro-based lawyer who specializes in energy.

Most noteworthy, Ms. Rosado said, were clauses letting the government assign fields directly to Petrobras without holding bids and to veto operational decisions of Petrobras' joint ventures with private companies.
(Can anyone say Acorn, in our healthcare bill?)

The prospect of prolonged wrangling in Congress over Mr. da Silva's proposal could also weigh on the company and on major foreign energy firms involved in exploration. The government leader in the lower house of Congress, Ideli Salvatti, said Mr. da Silva had requested fast-track status for the bill, contradicting statements by Energy Minister Edison Lobao on Sunday.
(wow, where have I heard that before?)

Mr. da Silva is proposing switching to a production-sharing system in which the government owns a part of the oil produced. That is a shift from the current system in which companies participate in competitive auctions to win the rights to explore for oil in blocks.
(Just too many parallels for one time, I'm going to bed.)

Count the number of times a Republican pol has decisively disavowed any of this nonsense. I count two, and both times it was John McCain (once on the campaign trail, and once re: the town hall hysteria--he was criticized for both).

There was a moment, back in the 1950's, when Bill Buckley, Jr. was forced to purge the conservative movement of its more reactionary elements: the John Birchers, people who believed that local governments were adding fluoride to municipal water supplies to facilitate mind-control, etc. Who's left to play Buckley's role today? Is there one unifying figure on the right? I'm still waiting for someone in a position of responsibility to denounce the "birther" movement. The "big tent" can't be a freak show.

All very interesting points, which I will look into. Thank you for being the lone voice of rational criticism in this thread. The more I look at that deal, the more it stinks of cronyism, as you say, but I'm not well-versed enough on the topic yet. If it's as bad as it looks on the surface, Obama's feet ought to be held to the fire by environmentalists over this one. Off-shore drilling is bad here, there, anywhere.

@scotmanster
The Dems, the Repubs... everyone was duped into that war. At one point, almost 7 in 10 Americans believed Saddam Hussein had something to do with 9/11. A few of us on the left didn't buy it, but most people did. So yes, once a President has a proven track record of lying and tricking people to support his pokicy goals, you get to question his motives. But you still don't get to indulge in fantasies about nonsense like child hypnotism without being called on it.

@redstateguy
All the polls show clear support for universal health care, the major issue of his presidency so far. Yes, I've considered the idea that I'm in the fringe, but the polls don't reflect that. You, however, I seriously doubt are capable of the self-reflection required to ask yourself if your viewpoints might be fringe.

Don't sound the death knell for the republican party just yet. The squishiness of the centrists can be squished one way or the other quite readily, and as the pendulum of ideology swings to and fro, it separates those in the middle to varying degrees. These people are not party loyalists, and vote according to their beliefs, not according to what they have been told to believe. They have shifted in large numbers before, and will do so again.

It was not long ago that those on the far right said that democrats were having to resort to pandering to illegals and letting illegals vote, because the democrats had aborted a good portion of their base.

The republicans have allowed the vocal outcry against the hr3200 to get loud and ugly, because, now be honest, if they had simply remained in their seats and asked questions, they would not have gotten any attention, or publicity. They had valid concerns, which were pooh-poohed by democrats as ridiculous, when in fact the seeds for such concern are written into the bill.
If Obama had any intention of listening to the people, he would have called for a do-over, scrapped this bill in its entirety, and started to seek a way to improve the situation that everyone could get behind. As it is, he is just doing just enough to get the bulk of his plan through, knowing full well that its success is dependent upon all the pieces.

Whenever anyone calls Obama a communist, he is demonstrating a serious lack of understanding of the word. If anyone calls Obama a communist after being informed of the definition, he is demonstrating willful stupidity.

A communist doesn't want personal ownership of any sort. All property, under communism, belongs not to the individual, but to the collective. Obama is not a communist. To call him one, you must first ignore what communism really is.

If I'm not mistaken we collectively own GM, Chrystler (of which the unions own a pretty nice size chunk, as now there members get a little more: tax payer piece = union piece). Which is why communism doesn't work the people can't own the property but the government can. Expand that and then the only property owners you have are politicians and those who work for the government.

You can state all the definitions you want, that does not make you educated. Would you rather have me call him a Socialist, a Leninist, a Maoists. He ain't no capitalist. He does not subscribe to Adam Smith's ideas, he does seem to be following Marx and Engel.

Do we not own a bunch of AIG, Citi, BOA, collectively.

Anyone in Europe or anyone that actually knows anything about these causes and Obama's actual policies would laugh at you. To the chagrin of the left, Obama is far from being any of those things. When it made sense to nationalize failing banks to make sure money would start going to the people again Obama refused. When it came time to chose economic advisers Obama chose the Wall Street Old Guard. When he wanted an energy policy, the logical, most efficient, and cheapest way to do it would have been to instate a simple carbon tax, but Obama took that off the table and acquiesced to what the industry and the lobbyists preferred so they will get rich from a cap and trade system. When he wanted Health Care the Single Payer system favored by the rest of the world would have saved the most money, but once again Obama took that off the table, and now it looks like he will abandon a mild public option. When it came to the military Obama continued the militaristic Bush policies.
Instead of you folk just calling names and demonizing the president why don't you talk about real issues as HNN challenged you to do?
Talk about Obama being a socialist is just as baseless as the nonsense about getting hysterical because Obama wants our kids to study hard and succeed in school.

Actually many Europeans immigrated to the US becuase of social and politicol persectution in their own native countries, not becuase they valued the American market system.

In fact many of the immigrants around the turn of the century tried to start communist parties or join communist parties when they came to America.

This is one of the reasons that immigration limits were set in the 1920s.

And now we move into willful stupidity. A communist wants to abolish all private ownership. Let me reiterate: Abolish all private ownership.

Not clear enough? I'll use some emphasis this time: Abolish ALL private ownership. This will never happen, and unless you're outright insane, you know that.

Socialists, on the other hand, want the means of production to be government-run. Socialism and communism are not interchangeable in meaning, because you can support socialized industries and be against the abolishment of private ownership.

Obama isn't a socialist, either. As Altruist rightly points out, his policies have been disappointingly centrist.
29 months ago: Oh yeah, "if your white". WT heck does that mean other that an insult towards whites? We are now guilty of our heritage? All of us.

What if your half white, what if your half red, what if your half yellow, what if your quarter white, what if your quarter red, what if your quarter yellow?

Why not claim it?

How about government subsidized programs that will be dropped? How about the fact that in the next Census there will be more questions about racial origin than ever before? Brought on by the left.

Did I leave the browns out? It is because the are not mixed in there own minds. The majority are "La Raza".

My wife is quarter French so does that mean my children born in America can call themselves French? I hope not. You reversed racists still don't get it.

"anyone that actually knows anything about these causes and Obama's actual policies would laugh at you."

"Obama is far from being any of those things."

"Obama refused."

"Obama chose the Wall Street Old Guard."

"Obama took that off the table"

"once again Obama took that off the table"

"Obama continued the militaristic Bush policies."

You have listed six MAJOR lies that Obama has told so far. Fundamental democrat promises that he has reneged on, IN EIGHT MONTHS!

When are you guys going to wise up and realize that Obama is not calling the shots, he is a puppet on the strings of the true world powers, the central bankers. Why do you think he chose the Wall Street Old Guard? They put him in office. They will make a killing through their stock handling of C&T credits, they are making a killing financing the wars, and if they finance nationalized health care, they will make a killing financing that also.

right now, our interest payments alone are around $42 billion per month

and in nine years, thanks to the miracle of compound interest and minimum payments, our interest payments alone on their loans to us are going to be $820 billion PER MONTH!!!!PER MONTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Time is really running out, folks.
29 months ago: Dranger. Your out of line.
29 months ago: Obama relieved the Commander over Afganistan and replaced him with a Commander which will be asking for 20,000 to 40,000 more troops while under Obama's watch. Go figure that decline out.
29 months ago: "Oh please give it a break if you where born in America you are 100% American. "America" is not a race."

So then you should have no issue with the childeren of illegal immigrants who were born in America.

You are correct, if I was in line I would be living in a 1 dimensional universe. However, I am currently living in 3 dimensions. Thank you for pointing that out.

29 months ago: Cypress Gang, I don't see how pointing out that the true Americans are the Native Americans and all other Americans come from somewhere else is out of line. I was simply pointing out known things.

I did not say any race was superior to another race or likewise that any race was inferior to another race.

So calm down. This is the internet, not real life. There is no reason to get upset as you did, especially over something as benign as pointing out that there are different ethnicities in the world which last time I checked, wasn't a hate crime or the sign of a prejudiced person but rather an observation.
29 months ago: ....and Ethan Allen was European.....

Therefore, yes you are American with European roots.

I never said you weren't American, I just said that most white Americans have European roots.

Explain, mr. tin-foil-hat man, why Obama has not lived up to any of his campaign promises.

If he has fulfilled any promises, then please list them here.

If he hasn't, and you blame the republicans, please explain why you think he is so ineffective as a president.

Any promises he has already broken, such as the ones Altruist so kindly listed, please explain why those promises were broken.

29 months ago: Sorry, I left out that Ethan Allen had European roots, he was born in the colonies.
29 months ago: "Explain, mr. tin-foil-hat man, why Obama has not lived up to any of his campaign promises."

Because he is a politician and they never live up to all their campaign promises. That goes for Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians...everybody.
29 months ago: Also he hasn't even been in office for the entire year yet, did you expect for him to fufill all those promises before the end of his first year?

I'm not your monkey, figure it out yourself.

Explain to me why you want me to explain an explanation that explains Obama's explained promises in an explaining manner. And then an explanation of what I just said.

"Lets talk about why they refuse to go through the proper channels? "

How about no.

Plus, you said if your born in America, your 100% American. You didn't say that your parents have to be born in America or be in America legally.

Therefore if you want to be right, retract your former argument, which will admit you were wrong.

What are your views on the oil deal, and on Altruists comments regaling Obama's shortcomings?
29 months ago: See the difference between you and me is that I don't take the internet seriously. Though you're butthurt and back-tracking right now to recover yourself, you can insinuate anything you want about me, and I won't care. Because all you are to me is an anonymous internet denizen, an individual in a sea on online anonyminity. The only trace of you exists are the words on the screen. Thus, I don't care.

So you can tell me that i'm anti-social and will soon isolate myself from everyone. But the thing is, thats how you feel and percieve the matter from behind your computer screen. Therefore, you can't actually get a real grasp upon or reality. For that to happen, you would have to meet me in real life.

So please, unless your insulting me for your own benefit (in that case please don't stop), then your just wasting your time.

I do realize that I said that nothing on the internet should be taken seriously, and then made you read a serious message, so please, call me a self-absorbed, ignorant hypocrite. I really won't care.

You may want to delude yourself into thinking you are somehow invisible on the internet, and that you can't be held responsible for you actions on here. Personally, I encourage you to keep on thinking that way. Spill out all the bile you have stored up, all the anger you can't let go of. By all means, don't delete any other accounts you may have out there. I encourage you to use the same rhetoric you have demonstrated here today.

Well, that's all for now. Be seeing you.

29 months ago: "The post OOTB linked to really shows your age dangerranger with that.. enjoy talking to yourself because I have no time for kid games."

LOL, the internet is SERIOUS BUISNESS. I would never engage in child games like fighting with someone you can't see, hear, touch, etc. That would be plain silly.
29 months ago: "Don't tell me to calm down. What was that insult? "No, I Am Your Father!!!!" You want to insult me? Fine.

Yo crazy, calm down. That wasn't an insult that was an order. "I am Your Father" is an obvious reference to Star Wars, and if you didn't have you head so far up your self absorbed butt you would have seen that. I don't want to insult you, but you make it so damn fun that I have too. As to your family, that's your problem not mine. Just think to yourself "sticks and stones."
29 months ago: Hey out of the box, have you ever thought to yourself, "Wow, this guy is such a douche, either he has serious emotional problems...or more likely he just likes to piss people off on the internet. I could either engage in written combat to beat this guy and put him in his place, showing once and for all the internet is for serious buisness...or I could ignore him."

I'm guessing that thought never went through your head. You would much rather fight with someone who is here to fight and not contribute at all rather than realize that he is here simply to mess around and just ignore him. But simply ignoring someone would be the sensible thing to do, wouldn't it?
29 months ago: "drainger.

29 months ago: I'm not tolling the death knell for the Republicans, OOTB--just wondering what the new winning coalition will look like, and how durable it will be. George Will, David Frum question Palin's credentials for higher office, and are dismissed as "conservative intellectuals". I'm not of the Rove-Norquist school: I'm not interested in building a permanent single-party majority, so the choice can't be honest, open criticism of candidates or nerd/wonk-bashing.

Kudos to John Henke and others for creating distance from the birthers. Still, Fox gives air time galore to Mark Williams--tea party organizer and unrepentant birther. David Horowitz, a regular contributor to FIRE (a group criticized by Henke for using WND's mailing list)--also welcome on Fox News (watched him the other night, actually--Fox's special on textbook controversies). Same w/ Jerome Corsi--regular WND contributor, Fox guest. I see no real demands made on Fox to sever these ties. And we're parsing "reactionary" sources with these boycotts, anyway. What makes, for example, World Net Daily any more "fringe" in its tastes than the Moonie-run Washington Times? It's connection to the widely-discredited birther movement?

And the latest "conspiracy"? Obama's garden-variety civics boilerplate, turned "indoctrination". I can't tell you how many Reagan-era addresses I was made to watch, with classmates, during class time. No one ever thought "brainwashing" or demanded the right to opt-out. Still this directive to politicize everything-Obama.

29 months ago: Actually, unless Palin can do big things in the next three years, I would have to agree with Will and Frum. I'm still thinking Romney, but it's a long way off.

I really don't watch the Fox channel, I honestly don't watch television at all anymore, for those reasons you mentioned. There seems to be nothing fair and balanced about any of the news outlets, so I get my news on the internet, where I can get several different slants on the same issue quickly, and I don't have to worry about tone influencing my understanding it.

You are correct on the speech Obama gave, rather dull, probably didn't hold the kids attention long, just like the other President's speeches were similarly unimpressive. I'll be honest, though, I had my reservations about what Obama was going to say to my elementary school children, only because of what I view as his leanings toward progressive ideals. I have not had time to review the speech, so as of yet, they haven't seen it.

It seems as though it has become almost mandatory to challenge these speeches, as the democrats did in 1991 with GWHB's speech.

http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/blogs/beltway-confidential/When-Bush-spoke-to-students-Democrats-investigated-held-hearings-57694347

It sort of reminds me of the parents who fight at a Little League baseball game.
