In the past few days much media attention has been given to the man with the golden voice Ted Williams. While he was struggling with homelessness and a drug addiction, his ex-wife was raising his 5 children alone.

Patricia Kirtley and Ted Williams had 4 daughters and she also raised a son he fathered with another woman. She now resides in Ohio and has 16 grandchildren. Her eldest daughter was 7 when Ted left. Another remarkable thing about Patricia, she is partially blind. Patricia and Ted ended their marriage 23 years ago. Patricia never received one dime in child support.

While he was struggling with a drug addiction, she had to go on welfare. She eventually attended school and became a licensed blind vendor to support her children. Most of the past 23 years, Ted have been missing in action. He is a stranger to his own children and grandchildren.

Although it is good to see Ted Williams get back on his feet, the real honors should go to this struggling mother and grandmother. She is the real hero.

UPDATE - 16 months ago
Ted Williams admitted to Dr. Phil that he has been drinking heavily since his recent success. Ted was admitted into rehab on 1/12/2011. I wish him well in his road to recovery.

Any honorable man would have stayed at home and spent the rent money and grocery money on their addiction. Only a careless man would leave the house so all the money mom had would go toward the children. And those children, however they turned out, would have been so much better if they had numerous memories of 'Dad' passed out on the couch, on the floor, or out on the front lawn. Shame on him for depriving his children of these 'memories' they COULD have had. As far as mom goes, she couldn't qualify for the Welfare checks if Dad was still in the house - addictions notwithstanding. It's too bad she finally had to get a job - that Welfare-To-Work program was hard on everybody. It's good that the Government didn't require a single mom to actually find another man and get remarried. If they had, mom would have been robbed of her opportunity to complain that she had to raise five children 'ALL ALONE!'. And to those who say that 'aloneness' is a choice, just because she chose to not marry any of her post-divorce nu rubbers doesn't mean that she chose to be alone.

He may not be as honorable as some may wish, and I am quite sure he has never claimed that. He demonstrably told in public that he has problems, that he had drinking problems and that his family and his life has suffered for his flaws.

For his change and good will, he has got a lot of attention and people willing to help him. There is nothing wrong with that. He is that last person to bash in this moment, because he repents and wish to get better.

There are numerous people which are honest, and take care of their children and society, and such are truly remarkable humans.

But the story about Ted Williams is the story about a poor immoral guy wishing to change his condition and rehabilitate. And that is worth as a good example for many others, which never wish to improve or become better.
