Geohot Responds To Sony About Playstation 3 Hack

Sony Corporation started legal proceedings earlier this week against Hackers who had Jailbroken the PlayStation 3 Claiming that the hackers had put their software At piracy risk . The hacker group fail0verflow, and Geohot Responded saying that the only reason they hacked the system Was to gain the use of "OtherOS".

Plausible Deniability Maintained

According to the Yahoo news fail0verflow Said "Our exclusive goal was, is, and always has been to get OtherOS back." Goehot followed up with that claim saying that he supports the rights of software developers. And, in his response to Sony's lawsuit he claimed that Sony Wasn't looking to Protect their software but instead " it's an attempt for Sony to send a message to any would-be individual that attempting to use any hardware it manufacturers in a way it does not deem appropriate will result in harsh legal consequences, irrespective of any legal basis or authority for such action." In his response he also asserts that he has no affiliation with the other named defendants.

But Still No Restraining Order

On the Goehot website Mr. Hotz claims that as of 2:00 PM today, there are no Temporary Restraining Orders (TRO's) active, yet. He also points out that at this time he isn't taking any donations for the legal battle he will have to face. Although, in an interview with "Attack Of The Show" he did say that he has retained counsel, and is confident of emerging unscathed from this.

David And Goliath Syndrome

When the interviewer asked him as to his concern about taking on a giant like Sony, ("On a scale of 1 to 10, how puckered are you?") he answered, "The adrenaline is definitely flowing." And I can believe it…Hotz is a 21 year old prodigy who stumbled onto something many wanted, so he gave it to them. Gave it, not charged. And so, since the TRO isn't in effect yet, I'll give it away, too.

16 months ago: wow you are really ignorant. you have no idea what he has done for the community. he does this for our rights. you may be right about the other OS thing, nobody really cares about it. its the principle behind the thing. Sony thinks they can do what they want, just like apple did. the real point behind this whole thing is really do you own what you have bought. if you are promised something how can they take it away. they should have patched the area geohot was poking at, not fully remove it. this applies to anything. this whole case is more than the ps3. and he specifically said he blocked piracy, and this is true because the home brew that allows piracy wont boot the games backed up.

its ignorant people like you that give hacking and home brew a bad name. there is a clear difference between that and piracy. which by the way was already enabled by a device called psjailbreak, which was a usb device that you plugged into the ps3, and allowed the use of backed up games, and gave you the ability to backup games. that company should be getting sued. but no they are going after someone who released a custom firmware, that could not be blocked and released the private keys. and in all actuality the fail0verflow team found the private keys.

and again this isn't about acceptance, its about rights, which apparently you are to ignorant to realize.

a good example would be if you bought a house with a pool, but before you move in they take the pool away....but wait it was advertised with a pool, why are they removing it...wouldn't you be pissed, even if you would never use the pool, the fact that it was taken away would anger you. and if it doesn't than you are f***ing stupid

Geohot has made some mistakes and I believe he probably has good reasons for those mistakes.

the one mistake I think he made can be a double edged sword for him.
He has made himself the public face for hackers worldwide. (someone may not agree with that) but it is true.

He has jail broken, hacked, reversed engineered whatever you want to call it Sony, the two most sought out electronic toys of our time. and by making himself be known it is apparent that he has nothing to hide and possess a spirit of transparency.

In the other hand, if he was a ghost and then got caught, he would them have a BS story and would be discredited of any justifications for his work. no hobby because he makes no profit from this, a game if you may.

And that is what the PS3 is for playing, browsing the net, watching movies and other fun stuff, some of us play cartoon games others play C. O. D. Black Ops, and others play with firm ware!

Because of guys like Geohot Sony or another giant company will make a gamming system that will allow homebrew and will not care cus they will profit regardless but Sony is an empty bin and will never be satisfied.

I for one bought the PS3 because it could be used as a PC. did I ever use it as that no, but after following the scene I would like that back and learn from those guys like I have been learning on the WII!

Good point no1warr1or, bout the pool thing. Sonny will lose this fight Geohot is the Many Pacman of hacking and deserves our support. Sony needs to reconcile with us the true gamers and customers with the deepest interest in the product they sold us. Or they will fall to piracy again. ("that cat is not going back in the hat") I can't believe he said that. Lol...

Good luck Geohot! And for those who live near where they are having the court proceedings you all should PROTEST IN HIS BEHAVE AND MAKE IT HUGE AND DRIVE AS MUCH ATTENTION TO THIS CASE AS POSIBLE!

I dont care if he knows how to install another Os or jailbreak the system
I myself once installed Obuntus on mine then what? I got bored next day
I never really used it because I does not meet ( computer purposes) for me , I own 3 ps3 and customized features however I didnt go to youtube and blogs posting this why ? because it wont do any good in my opinion

stores that sell Ps3, psp, movies etc are going broke why because around the corner you can find the same movies, psp, ds games for a cheap price

everysingle lobby is hacked and these are all kids trying out the hacks that Hunter made public
see this isnt fun anymore and all started by challanges lobby which are now
hacking profiles. I never cheated in a game. it took me 30 days of playing to get to my 4th prestige and they reset everything. tell why ? isnt that abuse


all I know is that Geo DIDNT do it for the community
from XACKER to hacker I know he didnt do it with the same purpose I would of done it
once you get another system under ps3 you will be able to modified tons of feature
Sony took OS out the ps3 because they knew people Like GEO will try what he just done ( Piracy is the number one reason people try to jailbreak their ps3)

16 months ago: yes he has made mistakes. people should not have been messing with this because of the fact that it is a "GAMING" console. and that's what its sole purpose is. now when the jailbreak came out, hell yea i installed it, but for the intention of backing up fallout new vegas (which i own) because loading times are kinda bad. that is the only reason mine is jailbroken. but the fact is the backup manager doesn't work. so i will most likely remove the jailbreak.

in my opinion the ps3 should have stayed a closed system. and for the reason of cheating, pirating, and many other reasons. all of these seem harmless, but they end up effecting us, the people that wanted simple features or for it to stay closed.

i will say though that the "idevices" is great having jailbroken and I'm glad its legal...because its not a gaming console. its great to install all kinds of themes and apps that aren't approved by apple

and one final note is that people say the m33 hacks for the psp killed the psp. i believe otherwise, the psp was dead when Sony stopped releasing firmware for like a year and no good games were produced. the only games that i have played on the psp, is metal gear solid portable ops and GTA vice city stories. the home brew revived the system for a little while, but its just dead. to many bad things against it.

Sony allow people to use their console with any version below 3.20 access to the Os feature
however, you wouldnt be able to connect to the net ( their server)

jailbreak the system and allow him to connect to the Psn

16 months ago: if he wanted piracy he would have kept it to himself instead of stir up a bunch of ****. he could have kept it a secret, and same with the fail0verflow team.

in my opinion Sony should release a update that flashes a new security bios or whatever to the ps3, to make it secure once again. and at the same time give us otheros (and just patch anything that becomes a problem) and give us the ability to "install" a game, kinda like on the 360. this will satisfy a lot of people me included, and in the months to come give us a bunch of small new features, and a few major features, while patching any holes in the firmware.

this would make pretty much everyone happy. except for cheaters and people that pirate. and if they pursue it anymore, then yes they are after the pirating ability

THE OS FEATURE IS THERE if you downgrade the update to a less than 3.20 or so
you can do whatever you want with the console but you are breaking SONY POLICIES once you want to enjoy the online services
this is what I want you to understand . Sony block the feature because future piracy programs, and told you on the agreement
you can decide stay or not with the upgrade ( is your console just dont to use it with our services if you dont upgrade.

if they give you the ability to make back ups you will be selling the game after installation

16 months ago: look guys the ps3 was untouched for 4 years for a reason, and that's cus the people with Geohots abilities were content. As soon as Sony removed the other os feature it got HACKED. That is the point and reason for Geohot and other alike.

If piracy follows then it does, they need to learn from this and stop pushing others around. Sony wont win this just cus there is a posiblility of piracy, there was a posibility of piracy when the Iphone was hacked and look Apple lost. My friend has a jailbroken Iphone and he showed me a hack that allowes him to get any app from Apple for free.

and you cant pursicuite someone for what you believe their intentions are. you have to prove that! and those guys made it pretty clear that they do not support piracy. and franckly what you think his intetions were is meaningless.
at this point he has done nothing elegal.

prying that door open was going to take alot of guts and smarts and would most definately piss Sony off. but that door had to be open. for us the true gamers, we dont just play the games they want us to play we can find our own games and build our own apps to make our gamining system what we want it to be and still access Sonys network.

what you don't understand is this is history repeating it self and this will only bring forth better systems....

16 months ago: to be honest when i first read your first comment a few days ago, i was pissed, because i have believed in geohot. and now im kind of with you with this whole thing. you have made good points. it all seems alittle suspicious now. and now modern warfare is getting hacked... psn is crumbling right now. and sony needs to act quick.


this is a way bigger issue than i thought it was. bigger than the psp and iphone.

i took my ps3 back to official firmware. and contacted sony on how to ensure i dont get banned.

the ps3 does what it was advertised to do.. and that is gaming.. nothing else

im sorry i snapped on you and am glad i now fully understand what this is doing to the ps3 and psn... i thought it was going to be good.... its not.


geohot was right about the iphone. but i believe he should pay for the disaster he has created with the ps3 hacks. i only hope the ps3 can be patched...

People that are with him arent really gamers at all
most of them are hacker and cheaters that support piracy and love to
take advantage on other gamers

Modern warefare is impossible to play anymore
as soon as your team is winning they start launching codes and cheats
even reseting your rank and etc
a friend of mine got his account hacked and game reseted
he reported the guy to Sony and got banned

we do not need this .. Sony needs to patch ASAP.

PS3 Console Bans Soon, New Firmware 3.60 Inbound

Sony has not released an official response to the recent PS3 jailbreak problem that has afflicted the console. This weekend Slygamer contacted the Sony Technical Support Department and asked them some hard questions about the Jailbreak. In the video/audio below, the gamer poses as a jailbreaker that claims he believes his device is jailbroken and needs advice on what to do about the situation.

The Sony representative tells him that he will be banned, and that he should "Buy a new Console", before backtracking and telling him that he shouldn't go online with the device or risk a permanent banning to both the console and the accounts associated with it. Have a listen to the audio below, the representative also mentions that Sony will be issuing an update soon that will "fix" the problem.

I don't think that Sony is a victim here. If you feel that hackers mess up your gaming experience, then ok that I agree to.

if things are getting out of hand the way you described it, that sucks for those who car and those who are abusing well they should get banned.

I am for the hacking scene because they open the consul to new apps and more creative way to use the machine I bought.

it does mess with our online experience & since online gaming is available
i dont think many people play campaing then online. most of gamer they go straight online then campaing in fact most of the games nowdays are going to be base online only . like battlefield1942, mag and others.

back in the past when you used play Mario, mortal combat and those games
there wasnt hacks on system it was bugs ( cheats) no hacking just bug( gliches)

like up down , up up lef etc
this code were on the game already you could not install them
30 life contra is was an incorporated code that was there for the user to find out and most of these codes were revealed by the same company creating a magazine that would come in plastic so you had to buy it then you would practice them and when you go to your cousing or friend's house you would use them and look better
that was all. there was no harm other than pissing your other player off.
nowday things are different
online gaming involve many risk

ex: when you play on pc you are connected with a bunch of people
but one of them may no be playing he/she may be executing codes behind the game to access your pc and steal info and exposing you to the net
ok.. some are cheater some not this is my point when it come to reveling certain codes and exposing such info to public
if you read my comment . I said that I dont care if you or anybody jailbreak the system as long you dont bring on other people or expose certain details that can damage gamers community and company like sony
cheat and codes are always there but hacking is more than that..

I understand you frustration and there is a good a bad and an ugly to hacking those that hack with bad intentions affect us all, but Geohot can't be blamed for what they are going to do or have the ability of doing. like gun makers can they be blamed for the gang banging in my neighborhood? I am sure they are not.
