There has been a recent surge of this annoying trend in Film making, as well as TV producing. It first really caught my attention (And annoyed the piss out of me) on the Made for TV movie about the Disasters. It was a sequel to the Earthquake movie. EVERY 5-10 seconds, the camera would pan the room and then suddenly ZOOM IN on someone and Miss the target and then proceed to get the subject in frame... then cut away!
This happened All throughout the film! I can see once in a while, and if it fits the context, like in "The Office". In "The Office" the cuts usually happen at an uncomfortable moment for the person, which makes it kinda funnier seeing their reaction, or having them look into the camera. This works, I think, because the show is supposed to be a fake documentary. When Action Movies do it, it is just plain annoying.
Case in point, The New John Cena film 12 Rounds. While I was watching the "Making Of" it looked cool. But, I just witnessed a clip of it on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. The clip showed several shaky shots that zoomed in on Cena's Hand and then his foot! Then, shortly after, on "Last Call" while Carson Failey was Interviewing Chris Cornell, the Camera cut to a Handheld that seemed to be held by and operated by someone who has never run a camera. It would zoom in, focus, go out of focus, focus and Zoom out, then in again. Man, get some Professional Cameramen.
Stop this **** or shoot yourself in the face. Please.
