Earth Day and all that

OK so it's Earth Day tomorrow where we're meant to think about all things, well Earthy I guess. But what is it all about, what does it mean, does it really matter what we do, can we control our planets eco-system?

Here's an interesting point, when people campaign to Save the Planet isn't that being a bit arrogant? Frankly the planet was getting on just fine for billions of years before we came along and life was also being getting along just fine without us too. Shouldn't we really be campaigning to save the Human race?

Let's think about it. Climate change has and will always happen; we know this because we know it is at least in part connected to the irregular orbit of the earth around the sun. Can we influence it? Yes we can. Can we stop it happening? Almost certainly not.

Extinction is also a natural process that has and will always happen. Species come and go and every so often in the past there has been mass extinctions where the eco system has apparently crashed wiping out most of the species on the planet at that time; in variably it seems especially the dominant ones. Can we influence events that might result in another mass extinction? Yes. Can we prevent it from ever happening? Probably not.

Life on Earth will likely be just fine until the sun starts the end of its life cycle or Earth gets hit by something so big it utterly destroys it. Can our actions result in the end of all life on this planet? It's very unlikely. Can our actions result in our extinction? Well quite possibly.

The point is all these campaigns to protect the Earth's eco-system are really aimed at protecting the eco-system in which we are most comfortable. A few degrees temperature change either way and life doesn't cease on this planet but our crops start failing and we start going hungry and dying out. A few percent change in the amount of oxygen in the atmosphere and life doesn't cease but we start dying out.

It wouldn't take much to destabilize our social system of order to which we have become so accustomed. This would result in the collapse of society and a return to life before electricity, mass farming, mass transport etc. A time where few of us today could survive. Indeed a fairly small change in the eco-system could result in our extinction leaving many other species to carry on the mantle of life on Earth.

Should we bother with Earth Day? Well I'd like to die an old man and I'd like my kids to grow old and die old too; I can only assume they want the same for their kids. I think we need to do as much as we can to understand our eco-system, preserve what we can and learn to adapt to what we can't prevent from changing. One day it will bite us and we owe it to ourselves to be prepared.

Good Post.

Exactly! You are right, humans are basically a blip on earth's timeline. Even if we nuked the hell out of the place, killing ourselves off, the earth would recover and go on.

Environmentalism wants to save the planet for future humans. Its like saving an awesome snack at a party for your friends who are coming in an hour. You don't want to "save" the snack, you want to keep part of it around for your friends.

Now the difference with the Earth is that its surface is filled with renewable things like plants, animals, etc.

What happens is that things like for instances, forests, arn't logged sustainably. This means that if logged unchecked, the forest will disappear and not come back.

Why is this bad? Forests for one are a carbon sink. They absorb CO2 (a greenhouse gas) and help keep the planet cool. Forests also act as a sponge for water. With the forest gone, all the water in it will evaporate or run down hill, causing massive soil erosion and mudslides since no plants would be holding the soil down with their roots.

Forests are also an important place for life. Plants, animals; things we can exploit to use. If we use it all up, then we will no longer have those things to exploit and use.

So environmentalists don't want to go all Captain planet and save the planet. They want to make sure that it is being used sustainably so that it can be around for future generations to enjoy and exploit.

Actually, if you compare fossil record, humans are causing a mass extinction on a greater scale then ever before recorded in natural history. Basically, the age of humans has been an age of mass extinction.
34 months ago: Srry for not finishing.

We can prevent the mass extinction going on right now becuase we are causing it.
34 months ago: "Can we influence it? Yes we can. Can we stop it happening? Almost certainly not."

I agree, we can influence climate change. In fact we are doing it right now. Can we stop climate change? On the scale that it is occuring right now, yes. If we were to stop releasing green house gasses into the atmosphere, or at least do it on a much more insignificant scale, we would see the planet cool much sooner than we would see it warm to its current temperature again.
34 months ago: "One day it will bite us and we owe it to ourselves to be prepared."

There is one difference though. If we are as green as possible, that day won't be for at least another thousand years. If we don't stop what we are doing, we could see that day in the 21st or 22 century. I would much rather have the extra thousand years or so to prepare than have a century or two.

34 months ago: Hi Dangerranger, re my post on mass extinction, I wasn't clear. I concur with you. We have the potential to cause a mass extinction which we can stop. However ultimately events will conspire to cause one anyway - just hopefully not for a very long time indeed; this is no excuse not to do anything positive now unless you're the type (which I assume you're not) who is quite happen for everything go to hell in a hand basket for the human race.

Not to belittle the forests because your dire predictions of what will happen if we deforest the planet are probably pretty much spot on. Just think the oceans kinda get missed in the scheme of things; guess we can't see the affect we have on the mechanisms in the oceans that make them as good as they currently are at soaking up CO2 and pumping out oxygen. One thing is for sure, we need to work hard to understand it all before we mess too much with it; we sometimes screwing things up worse with our good intentions, although we did good with the hole in the ozone layer and dioxins.

And when we say, "Save the Planet" we are thereby implying all the creatures as we know them to be today. We are admitting that our activity is effecting the life of every creature on earth. That's all.

As an aside, nearly all gases are less soluble in water the warmer it gets. Global warming is driving oxygen out of the ocean suffocating fish and carbon dioxide needed for aquatic plants and algae. It's killing the coral reefs which are a primary sink for storage of CO2 as sodium carbonate. Which of course is helping to compound the problems you outline.
34 months ago: Whether you believe if we can control our eco-system or not, you should know Earth day is not JUST about that....it is also about making it a better place as a whole. That means, cleaner (less or no litter), better drinking water, or enough water for that matter, saving resources to ensure we are not wasting or using more then in necessary, etc.... I personally believe we effect everything....for every action there is reaction. But I can't convince them all, nor do I wish to. But what I do hope for is that all will agree that we cannot waste or be wasteful and we should take care to make the environment a cleaner one. This is hard to argue with that....don't you agree. So, with that said, even if you don't believe we can effect our eco-system, I do hope you can see that we should be clean and resourceful.

34 months ago: I totally agree with you Brendalyn, we can affect everything. I also agree we should be working to make things better, cleaner because if we don't we will end up bringing ourselves to an early demise.

What I was trying to point out however is that while we can affect everything there are some changes which we will need to learn to adapt to as well. Also that save the earth is really save the human race. :-)
