another sign of the coming apocalypse, a lady from New Jersey has publicly announced her goal of becoming the world's fattest woman. Donna Simpson weighs 600 pounds, and she's got her sights set on the 1000-pound mark.
How is Donna Simpson going to gain those 400 pounds of fat? She'll stick to a 12,000 calorie-per-day diet (just like Michael Phelps?), use her scooter to get around, and keep racking up a $750 weekly grocery bill.
Seems pricey, doesn't it? Donna Simpson is financially supported through a website where folks pay to view personal photos and watch videos of her eating fast food. Her husband is very supportive: he met Donna through a fat-fetish dating site. With a recent wave of publicity, it's likely Donna Simpson will be the world's fattest woman soon enough. She's on track to hit her 1000-pound goal in two years.
In related news, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced some new findings about health care spending in the United Space yesterday:
Obesity-related diseases account for nearly 10 percent of all medical spending in the United States or an estimated $147 billion a year, U.S. researchers said.
Today, some 26 percent of Americans are obese, which means they have a body mass index of 30 or higher, and that percentage just keeps rising.
The research team's leader noted that high-fructose corn syrup and sugar-sweetened beverages "play a particular role in the obesity epidemic." On average, Americans consume about 150 extra calories of sugary beverages per day than they did 20 years ago.
People like Donna Simpson are rare, but the epidemic of obesity in America is not going to just disappear. Do you think the government should get involved in people's diets?
