Have you ever been furnished with your own 'new' personal phone number, for a cell phone, or a land-line phone, by a company provider... And later, you start receiving phone calls, and messages that have been not for you; from someone who was trying to call the previous person, who had your 'new' (or, recycled) phone number?

How well, was that situation dealt with?

20 months ago: I once had the HRH Queen Elizabeth II's number reallocated to me when she lost her prepaid Virgin cell phone.

Lots of calls from Tony Blair. He kept on forgetting. If I could have done a convincing accent, things could have been very different.
20 months ago: I once had a phone number that had previously belonged to a plumber. That winter was literally the coldest winter on record for this area for 100 years. I never realized how many people's pipes froze.

We changed our number.

Did I say plumbers get calls at all hours of the night?
20 months ago: If the callers don't cease and it gets annoying, you will have to force the phone company to give you an new number. They will want payment for that service but since they are the ones who issued it, don't give them the satisfaction of charging you to do their job.

Other than that, you are at their mercy.
