Democrats Cave In: No Tier 5 for Unemployment Extension 2010

As they say, a week is a long time in politics and no more so then in the current lame duck session. Less then a week ago, the Democrats in the House of Representatives were in rebellion over the deal made between President Obama and the Republicans.
The most contentious issues of the agreement between the President and the GOP were the extensions of all the Bush era tax cuts for a further 2 years, but only a further 13 months extension for federal emergency unemployment insurance tiers 1 - 4. And a glaring omission was that the subject of a Tier 5 for the long-term unemployed – the 99ers, was not even discussed by those brokering the agreement.

On Wednesday, one of the most vocal Democrats in opposition to the bill, Peter Welch [D,VT], appeared to sum up the Democrats current position on the bill, with him being resigned to the fact that the bill would be passed by the House without any "significant" modification, saying "The die is now cast," and that "any further discussion of changes to the bill are now academic."

So it appears now that the Democrats have rolled over and caved in to the Republicans threats to block any amendments to the bill. By folding so easily, the Democrats have abandoned several million people to fend for themselves, leaving them without any form of assistance or income to tide them over until the nations depressed job market improves. To say that these people feel betrayed and abandoned by the Government is an understatement.

Readers have expressed their dismay, with Martin writing "I can't believe that this country of ours runs to help other countries in need, but is unwilling to help its fellow Americans. These Republicans are fighting because they want tax breaks for the wealthy and super wealthy, who in turn are sending all their jobs and business overseas. This has to be a literal crime against all Americans. I really don't understand why no one is voicing this in the media."

Another reader writes "It is said that the American voter has a short memory, but without relief for millions of 99ers in this package, this nightmare is just beginning. How many will it take before Congress wakes up to the untold suffering that is life without any unemployment benefits and abject poverty? When will the numbers get big enough that even the Republicans can not ignore them? Can they ever get big enough to make a difference?

The feelings of many were summed up by this comment: "There was never a Country as free as the United States of America. When it came into being, no such country had ever existed. People fought for their lives to keep such a freedom alive…Now once again more than ever here we stand again, watching our freedoms begin to disappear one by one. The Rich are becoming richer and more powerful as the Middle Class Begins to disappear and the poor just become poorer. How long will we stand and watch before we take action again, to save our freedoms here in the United States of America!"

14 months ago: What does 8 million people going to be unemployed and in desperate need of a tier 5 extensions to survive REALLY MEAN? WHAT DOES 8 MILLION UNEMPLOYED LOOK LIKE???
The metropolitan area of New York City(Manhatton, Bronx, Queens, etc)is home to more than 8 million people. ALL OF THEM WOULD BE UNEMPLOYED BY NYE 2010.
The population of the city of Miami, Florida is 413,201. However, there are 4.5 million people in the Miami metropolitan area. Miami is the fourth largest metropolitan area in the United States and that ONLY represents as of today how many people are cut off from unemployment. Maybe knowing that roughly 4 million people that currently live in Los Angeles, represents all the unemployment this very moment cut off! DONT WORRY JUST COMBINE MIAMI AREA WITH LA TO GET WHAT AWAITS US COME NYE 2010.
The entire population of Austria is 8 million.
8 Million represents how many people visit Niagara Falls or Lake Mead(near the Hoover Dam) YEARLY.
8 Million people stopped swiping their credit cards this year, for those of you saying just cut back and make ends meet you lazy bums! For those who are history buffs, until May 1945, the month during which the war against Germany ended, the United State's Army was over 8 million soliders strong.

Heres what 8 million will mean come by the end of this year; irionically, about 8 million people in the world die of poverty in a year!!

14 months ago: Here's my story. I know is nothing out of the ordinary. I hope I'm wrong believing that this is exactly what many Americans will be facing after getting off unemployment:

My last "Payment Request" was 3 days ago - Dec 04, 2010. I got 93 weeks of unemployment. Here in Texas we don't get 99 weeks. Before I became unemployed (March 2009) I worked harder than most people I know. In fact I do not know anyone that has worked as hard as me.

In 2006-2007 I worked 3 jobs - 15-17 hour days (balls to the walls kind of jobs - constant customer interaction). On one of the jobs I saw people being publicly humiliated by the owner, mocked, and laughed at. We were required to lie to our customers, steal from them, and re-use materials left over from other accounts that belonged to them. Paying $12/hr makes people forget their moral values. If you were offered $12/hr today, after being kicked off unemployment, you would agree to do terrible things too. I'm at that point again. And not alone.

The 3 jobs that I worked fried my nervous system. I saw people working along me (on 1 of the jobs!) anywhere from 1 week to 3 months and just running away. I lasted 13 months. I craved one thing - silence. Since then I seldom listen to the radio or watch TV.

I lasted 13 months working 3 jobs. Then I got "lucky" - switched to a single job in 2008. I was the only employee of a company owned by 1 person. I did all the work. Backbreaking, noise, vibration, toxic fumes, drive around in my own car all the time. After 3 months I could not open a door that had a ball shaped handle - my hands could not grasp well. The owner laughed when I told him - "Are you getting old on me?" he said. In the first 13 months of this company's existence I brought 106K. He did not work hard behind the scenes - I had to push him to buckle up and go to trade shows or to find new ways of advertising. After 13 months I asked for an $1/hr raise. That's $8 a day, $40 a week. He terminated me the next day citing bad work. Later he disputed my unemployment benefits claiming I did not work full time.

Today, Dec 16, 2010, I am looking at going back to insane work schedule - 2 or 3 jobs. 15-17 hours a day. IF I'm lucky. For a total of about $2,200 a month. IF I'm lucky again. You, the reader of my post, can't do that for long, but you don't know it. I can't do that for long, and I know it.

Once again - I hope I'm wrong believing that this is exactly what many Americans will be facing after getting off unemployment.

14 months ago: I can't believe nothing is being done for what i've heard is over 5 millions 99er's. My husband is on his 98th week when the benefits were cut off. we never thought he'd be on unemployment longer than 3 months and here is has been 98 weeks. Together we have sent out OVER 2,000 resumes and he's had less than 20 interviews. Each place told him they had hundreds if not thousands of applications for there one opening. Some places were about to schedule him for interview as he had all the skills they needed and when they found out he didn't have 6 months of previous employment said "sorry it's against company policy to hire the unemployed". When he asked how are the unemployed supposed to get a job if companies won't hire them these HR people couldn't answer. It's disguting. He was worked since he's 13 and is now 32. We had to put off having a family. Thank god i still have my job but i make 28k and after taxes we are 600 short on MUST pay bills a month because the unemployment ran out. if we are lucky we will get his 99th check with the extension passes. But i don't know how we will keep the heat on in january. Our credit is ruined. Many friends and family members in similatr situartions so they aren't in a position to help. He's not proud he had to take unemployment and neither of us had ever been on it before. We had no choice to keep the lights on and car payment paid. Even applying to minimum wage jobs has resulted in nothing. he served in the marines for 5 years. he's a hard worker and so depressed he can't get hired. There are too many unemployed in georgia. he was laid off as he was the top paid in his department when the bad economy hit. It was nothing he did wrong, he was the top salesman. but companies think people were laid off because they were bad employees. in alot of cases that isn't true it's the higher paid that they have to get rid of first. Someone needs to get a tier 5 passed. I know there are people in even worse shape that us who have both people in the household laid off and i can't imagine what they are going through. I'm sure senators and house of reps will have a great christmas but there a millions of american's who will be lucky if they have a roof over there head let alone food on the table. it's really sad the 99ers are being ignored. the majority are NOT lazy like some have posted on blogs. they want to work.

14 months ago: If the 99ers get help it will raise the Unemployment rates to a more acurate number. Well come January the Republicans will have to Govern and hopefully share some responsibility, so maybe the Dems will throw us something and blame the wealthy tax cuts ext. for the rise in the UI rates (in reality even if they expired we would still be paying for them in 2011 anyways). The Repubs will force them to have it paid for and want something in return for the wealthy of course. There is still hope. If your a 99'er blame the idiots that empowered these selfish idiots at the polls last month.
14 months ago: Personally I think the unemployment extention is hush money, so people can forget we are being robbed of jobs. If the jobs were there like they were supposed to be the unemployed could work, rather than continue to accept hush/bribe/welfare money. It's ashamed people are being treated this way.

14 months ago: So how many of the 5 million Tier 5 99ers have had college funds set up for their kids? How many young kids will not be able to go to college in the near future? I was one of them until I spent their college money on food and bills over the last few years. I, like many others, have sent out 500 resumes including applications for minimum wage jobs. Everybody told me to take college classes which I did. The education is on my resume...still no job..The anti-99ers are totally clueless like the government. What goes around comes around. I guess the government wants us to die. I'm sure that with 5 million unemployed people off their books will lower the unemployment rate JUST WHAT THEY WANT.

14 months ago: I would imagine if the unemployment count was not rigged and counted those who have given up or work a mere 5 hours a week the number would be astronomical. I think we are in a depression, the 99ers are paving the way for the next group of unemployees to join them in their joblessness. Kinda like ww2. At first it was a few jews they picked and it then grew and grew. Our 99ers group will get very big. I am curious about something, A friend of mine is a 99er and from a shop that makes auto parts. The girl is broken she's 50 and disabled. I haven't been able to think of anything else but my friend until
another friend told me to wake up. She said welfare would provide food electricity heat and phone. And they give, she said 400.00 a month or so for disposable income. So I did feel better. But is this true?
14 months ago: This is absolutely ridiculous - where has this country and OUR Manufacturers gone ?
I am a 99'er ........ and for the first time in my life looking for a homeless shelter !
at 48, a college Grad. who managed a $6 million/ yr company - in RI - and I have not been able to even get a job at a Convenience store - over qualified - or previously over paid - or even - too Old ( you get that picture when the company you apply for is filled with 20 -30 year olds ).
And it gets Better ! Here in RI after you exhaust your benefits your told to call united way 211 for assistance - when you do that - they refer you back to the State Department of Human Services, when you call the RI DHS - and tell them your a divorced White Male - and your child does not live with you BECAUSE YOUR HOMELESS - your told you do not qualify for ANY Assistance or programs - Trust me this is accurate -I was on the phone all day !

Now - If I came into the country - could not speak English - had no job - I would qualify for ALL the Programs ...... Mr. President - How does that work ?
Do I have to renounce my Citizenship - then apply for a green card to get benefits from this country ? Is this possible ??

Continuing the tax breaks for the wealthy is bad politics in this economy - trust me - the 99'ers will remember you for this - we do vote !

My benefits were spent on food, rent, child support, health care, i did not live a lavish lifestyle - but my money was spent here, in my country, in my town .... not on putting up another factory in China !!

Example - USA at one time was the largest Manufacturer of Integrated Circuits, now - Most are made over seas - even by American Companies ... So I ask - why not tax the imports heavily - until it is once again cheaper to make these and other products here in the USA ??

14 months ago: I am a 99er also and would be willing to do the 5 million person walk in Washington. Problem is I couldn't afford the gas to get to Washington. I am a 99er that is tired of "needing" I am a 99er that is use to helping others not being helped. I am a 99er that is willing to work if given the opportunity to work. I have read where people think the 99ers are lazy and just want a free ride. This is one 99er that is not looking for a free ride.... I am looking for an opportunity to be able to once again provide for my children and be productive!!!
14 months ago: A 5 Million Man march sounds like a great Idea - this 99'er was asked to leave his Brothers house last night - where I had been staying and paying rent until my benefits ran out - now I am out !! with no place to go because the shelters are fullhere in Rhode Island.

most of the 99'ers couldn't afford to get to Washington, and I'd be willing to bet more than half would love to !!

I also am willing to work at any position - but my age, previous experience, previous pay range seem to preclude me from even a minimum wage job - and again, as a divorced white male - i don't qualify for any assistance, job placement, work share programs at all ........

This Depression is not over, were just off the books and our country has been trying to forget about us, congress and the president just want us to go away .....

I just don't understand how this President of Change and turn a deaf ear on over
7 million Americans with such a negative impact on over 21 million Americans.

14 months ago: Although I agree with Sense, I must say that from what I have seen Obama has brought several things to the table that have been shot down. The fact that the public "option"' has been blocked and the Bush tax rate has been passed shows who is really in control. I think things would work out so much better if the Democrates would stick together instead of splitting off into 3rd and 4th parties. Replicans do a fab job at sticking together no matter what. Dems for some reason have a hard time standing one for all and all for one. It is enough dems to make a change, but they keep falling under the pressure instead of remaining strong. Looks like we might as well give up and let the corporations remain in control if we are not going to stand together and fight. Desperate times call for desperate measures and this in NOT the time to be bipartisan. Democrats just don't seem to have the backbone needed to make real change. Sad, but true.

If you believe in revenge, our best revenge is to VOTE THE BASTARDS OUT come 2012. I will be recommending that ALL INCUMBENTS BE VOTED OUT. Obama promised change and gave us more of the same anti-people government. We must vote out every incumbent in order to achieve change. Eventually in this manner we can change the laws regulating campaigns and achieve a level playing field in which we can elect People who really care about America instead of corporate boot-lickers who care only about themselves.
