According to the linked article in the Stars & Stripes Newspaper, Albert Snyder the father of a Marine killed in Iraq whose funeral was picketed by members of the Westboro Baptist Church has been ordered to pay the protestors' court costs.

http://www.stripes.com/article.asp?secti...

"On Friday, the Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in Richmond, Va., ordered Albert Snyder to pay $16,510 to Fred Phelps, leader of the Westboro Baptist Church. The group has picketed numerous soldiers' funerals since 2001, including Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder's funeral in 2006, using anti-gay and anti-military signs and slogans."

Snyder sued the group in 2007 and a jury awarded him $5 million in damages for invasion of privacy and emotional distress - the linked YouTube shows an interview between Bill O'Reilly and Mr. Snyder after the initial award. As the appeals court has overturned that decision, Mr. Snyder must now pay Phelps or the matter will go into collections, and Snyder could lose his property or wages.

Snyder has set up a fund to pay the court costs, accessible through:

...A federal jury awarded Mr. Snyder $2.9 million in compensatory damages, then later added a decision to award $6 million in punitive damages for invasion of privacy and an additional $2 million for causing emotional distress (A total of $10,900,000)...

...On 8 March 2010 the U.S. Supreme Court granted certiorari in Snyder v. Phelps, (Docket No. 09-751, March 8, 2010)...

It isn't over yet.

+1 to O'Reilly.

We can't picket in the middle of someones living room then why should they be able to picket something just as private as a funeral.

26 months ago: Fred Phelps, leader of the Westboro Baptist Church.

Is an insensitive a s s.

This dead soldier has no blame or shame and neither does the father.

If these church people want to protest the war, then go yell at the politicians who are really at fault.

We the common people are being killed for the benefit of the very rich.

When idiots blame the wrong person and his dead son for the crimes of others, it is no wonder that we all pay the price.

Why fight amongst ourselves?

I tell it like it is, I pull no punches, tell no lies, and I am as I am

When citizens protest against the members of the military who have died doing their job of protecting those same citizens, they are "biting the hand that feeds them". If there was a place to deport them to, I'd love to send them there. They are not protesting the war or the government, they are not at the funeral so cannot be protested against there.

As for the courts failure to provide justice to the father and uphold it through all challenges, I smell a buy-off.
