Oklahoma and I dont know how many other states still observe this retarded (for lack of a better word) thing called Daylight Savings time. Will someone tell me what purpose this thing serves? Thanks.

Daylight savings time was conceived by one of America's greatest early thinkers, a dude now mostly famous to youngsters for being the only non-president on a bill, Mr. Benjamin Franklin--and the $100 no less.
The purpose, which was for one of practicality than the awesome environmental impact it has for us today, was to push an hour of morning daylight time to the evening in the summer season.
For example:
Oklahoma City Saturday 7 March 2009
Sunrise: 6:52am
Sunset: 6:30pm
But on Sunday 8 March 2009
Sunrise: 7:51am
Sunset: 7:31pm

The idea in the old days was that this would give kids who help work the farms at night an extra hour of light to work. For we modern types, it gives us an extra hour after work of usable daylight for jogging etc. Or time when we don't need to have the lights on therefore saving energy for our nation. Most people are on their way to work during the now dark time in the morning, so it doesn't matter to them that it's dark while they ride the bus or drive or walk, and they are thrilled to have this time in the evening to enjoy the light.

Here's a great site that shows the difference it makes.

Also, most people don't know that this idea was considered so cool, that it's implemented in countries all over the world.
Also a good idea, time zones. Many people do not know that in all parts of China, you must operate on Beijing time. So if it's 6am in Beijing, it's 6 am everywhere, even if you are the equivalent of 4 times zones behind. So to you it's 2 am. Imagine what this does to your biological clock.
