Corporate Premonitions: Turning an Oil Spill into Payday

Prior to the explosion of the well on the Deepwater Horizon rig some big money decisions were made almost as if the decision makers knew there was going to be an explosion. Let me say right now that I am not accusing anyone of anything, yet. I am simply pointing out the extremely shady and near clairvoyant investment decisions that several big power corporations made prior to the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.

Before I get into the detail of the investments I will give the reader a bit of background information on British Petroleum. BP started out as a company called APOC (Anglo-Persian Oil Company) in 1909 in order to take advantage of oil that had been discovered in Iran. Eventually the Iranian people woke up to the fact that their natural resources were being looted by British Royalty and they elected a leader, Mohammed Mossadeq, who nationalized Iranian oil to give it back to the people and displaced BP. So in reaction to this in 1953 BP and our CIA staged a coup in Iran to overthrow Mossadeq, Operation Ajax, and put a military dictator in place. After using our government and their own BP successfully threw out a democratically elected leader of Iran and put the dictator Fazollah Zahedi in power who soon turned over the oil rights back to BP. To put it conservatively, overthrowing a democratically elected leader to install a dictator to sell out the nation to private interests is a less than ethical move. BP has also been caught dumping toxic waste in Alaska. They have also been caught covering up a toxic spill in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska as well. BP has been caught over and over violating human rights, dumping toxic waste, and even involved in carrying out a terror campaign in Columbian to protect a pipeline.

Needless to say that BP is not the caring and generous corporation that they claim to be on television. That being said let us now move on to the "preemptive" decisions that some of these key power players made prior to the explosion in the Gulf. First off is Halliburton's decision to buy the company Boot's and Coots just 8 days before the disaster, Boots and Coots is well known for putting out some of the largest oil and gas fires in the world. In another psychic and beneficial move, Goldman Sachs dumped half of their BP holdings, 4,680,822 shares, in the first quarter, right before the disaster. This is despite BP posting record gains in the fourth quarter of last year.

Some other intuitive dumping was done by Wells Fargo, who sold off 98 percent of their shares of BP days before the disaster. The Swiss bank UBS also sold off 97 percent of their shares prior to the explosion. In an overtly suspicious move Goldman Sachs placed shorts on Transocean stock as well, which is betting that a stock will fail, the day before the explosion of the rig. As if all these moves aren't dubious enough BP chief, Tony Hayward, sold off one third of his holdings of BP stock weeks before the disaster.

Looking at all of these equivocal and suspect decisions that were made by these individuals and corporations prove nothing. However what they should do is raise many questions. Why will BP only use the 100% toxic and 54% effective dispersant Corexit when there are many other much more effective and much less toxic dispersants available? Well, Corexit is produced by a company called Nalco and, guess what, in 2003 Goldman Sachs purchased Nalco for 4.3 billion. It seems like this oil spill just continues to benefit the Goldman Sachs balance sheet, does it not? Another question should be why BP ignored the recommendations by the safety inspectors and all but deliberately caused the explosion. Also, why did BP not only ignore the safety recommendations but they actually took actions that may have caused the explosion in the first place? BP released testimony documents and on page 37 here, it states that they found evidence of tampering. "ROV identified undocumented modifications to the hydraulic control system; the extent of the modifications is unknown at this time." Couple this collage of corruption and swindle with the fact that BP just bought the rights to key search terms on the internet in order to manipulate public opinion and you have to be catatonic to not see that something fishy is going on.

Just what exactly is going on here? Many speculations can be made like the fact that the American people have generally resisted the Cap and Trade agenda that is favored by some of the Big Oil companies. Now the very legislation that will allow Big Oil to pay the government for the right to pollute is on the house floor just weeks after this disaster. I am all for protecting our environment but if the Cap and Trade legislation was going to benefit the environment, why would a proven polluting and corrupt company like BP be an advocate for it? The bottom line is that without hard evidence no conclusions can be made. But if we allow all of these doubtful acts to go unquestioned and get swept under the rug, the only ones that will lose will be the people. We have to hold these multinational corporations who have so much power over our government to the fire or else the Corporatist State will inevitably ensue.

There will undoubtedly be many investigations into the disaster. If only half of these allegations are true, Heads should roll.

Unfortunately Money talks and most of congress has been paid off by big corporations like BP. The Dems have passed legislation that will regulate the big financial institutions and all of their inventions like derivatives. Of course the big companies have insured that there are many loopholes, and the Republicans have tried to kill the legislation altogether.

The right wing is against any regulation at all and Rand Paul is defending BP. The right has also been in bed with the fossil fuel industry and the have been their biggest cheerleaders (Drill Baby Drill).

I have read that Haliburton who was responsible for the cement seal, used nitrogen entrained cement which is less dense. The Drilling crew did a test and found that the seal was leaking, but the BP officials discussed it and a half hour later said to continue. They had removed the drilling mud and replaced it with sea water, and the leaking seal caused methane hydrates to form. These cathrates reacted with the cement and dissociated causing the methane to rise explosively in the pipe. The alarm system that was supposed to warn the workers of these "Kicks" didn't work, and the blow out preventer which was designed to prevent these blow outs had multiple failures.

NPR did some good investigative reporting. Let's see if anything comes of it: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/37125240/ns/...

If the Republicans were in charge of the investigation we could be insured that none of this would come out and nothing would happen. Even though the Dems and Obama are not as compromised as the Republicans, they have received more money from BP than the Republicans have.

A simple Carbon Tax would be much simpler, more efficient, and would also allow companies to plan ahead. Part of the revenue could be given to the public to offset higher energy costs and part could be used for research and development of alternative energy.

The Big Oil and Coal companies fear this more than anything else which is why it isn't even being discussed.
23 months ago: So Al, do you admit you are a socialist now?
23 months ago: Well done and very interesting AIC. I don't buy into many of the conspiracy theories but there is plenty of verifiable evidence which shows many persons in power do have an agenda and are working feverishly to bring it about. I like the way you presented this. It is difficult to believe so many "coincidences" occurred in such a way. I hope more investigation reveals any wrong doings.
The one coincidence I find very strange however is that Obama began to open gulf drilling in a very uncharacteristic move and in a very short period after this tragedy happens........just sayin.

I live about 35 miles from oil washing up in the marshes. It sickens me. This pristine ecosystem is dying by the hour. People down in this area are up in arms with a moratorium on drilling. This will put a minimum of 2 million people out of work. It is a deliberate attack on an entire economy and it solves absolutely nothing.

Jakarta, I don't "buy into" anything that I cannot show facts for. That being said, I think the term Conspiracy Theory gets used all too often in reference to real things, like the Gulf on Tonkin incident for instance. Or CIA mind control experiments done under MK Ultra, these are documented and declassified examples of crazy **** that our government did, that people still say are "conspiracy theories" But I have digressed enough. Thank you for your kind comments.

I recommend checking this piece done by the EU times, pretty scary stuff...

23 months ago: Well put. When one looks into the crazy stuff we are sure of and which is documented as factual cases it makes putting our complete faith in government pretty stupid or naive at the least. It also makes odd coincidences much more suspect in my book.

Also the fact that this hurricane season is expected to have twice the number and severity of storms doesn't sound too good for the area.

This is the biggest environmental experiment ever done. No one has any idea what the effect of this will be or how best to solve the problems or help the area recover afterwards. I hope they start using bioremediation agents instead of the toxic dispersants.

I think some good will come of this if they can tighten rules and regulations and come up with things that work. There is news that BP is deploying 32 of Kevin Costner's centrifugal oil separators. http://www.mercurynews.com/california/ci...

Unfortunately the next ten years look like they will be lean ones for you folk in the area.

Regrettably enough the corporate government ties prevent beneficial legislation from passing and we only get pro corporate legislation out of the process. As a matter of fact I can't think of one beneficial law in the last 50 years except for the Clean Air and Water Act. There was the Glass Steagall Act, but ole Bill "derburg" Clinton got rid of that beneficial law.

The answer to all this crap is easy. How can we let BP, a foreign company, have nearly 1000 lobbyists in our government? The majority shareholders of BP are the queen of England and Queen Beatrice of the Netherlands, who unethically own nearly all of Africa. Progress is not made when offshore corporations are allowed to lobby OUR government for their own personal benefit.

I heard about Kevin Costner's machines, thanks for that link. I was wondering what the hell that dude had centrifuges for, but it was for waterworld. The youtube link is pretty fricken scary too. I hear a rumor yesterday on the radio and it was about the EPA's reading on VOC's in the air in the Gulf. They have found dangerous levels of VOC's in the air, hydrogen sulfide 5-10 ppb is considered safe, they tested levels of 1200 ppb. Benzene, 0-4 ppb is considered safe and the current level in the GOM is 3000 ppb. Methylene Chloride 61 ppb current levels 3000-3400 ppb. I went to the EPA site and none of the links work that show the current readings….
