Travon Target - Marissa Alexander

When Zimmerman shot and killed Travon Martin the law assumed that it was self defense and that the Stand Your Ground law would apply.

When an abused woman, Marissa Alexander, was threatened by her violent husband 10 days after she had a baby, she didn't shoot her husband, she shot the ceiling as a warning. She had a permit for the gun and the husband had a record of violence. This should have been a prime example of Stand Your Ground, except that no one was hurt so no one should have been charged anyway. The woman should have been given an award for her restraint.

But the judge denied Stand Your Ground in this case. What is horribly incredible is that the woman was ripped from her children and sentenced to 20 years prison. http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/05/05/fl...

Meanwhile in the Travon Martin Case someone made thousands of targets of a silhouette that looked like Travon complete with the hoody, skittles and ice tea. They sold out in no time. Apparently there are a lot of folk down South that think Zimmerman was right to stalk and murder innocent black kids.

In our country there is a history of blaming the victim, especially if they are black. When Travon was murdered, they tested his body for drugs and alcohol but they didn't test the murderer's.

80% - 90% of women in prison are the victims of sexual and/or physical abuse yet very few have had the opportunity to have any counseling or treatment for that abuse. As a result they sometimes self medicated and that is what sent most to prison. It wasn't violence. While only 3% of men loose custody of their children 11% of the women loose custody of their children, despite the fact that the men are often convicted of violence and the women rarely are.

Why is this? In the Conservative world view it is the men who are supposed to be the bosses and the women are supposed to be subservient. The legal system still treats women as the property of men, so if they are raped or beaten, the victims are often treated worse than the criminals. (They deserved it for dressing provocatively) http://www.musc.edu/vawprevention/resear...

The Pentagon announced that our women warriors have suffered a 64% increase in sexual assaults and a Fox News commentator says what did they expect?

The Republicans are refusing to fund the Violence Against Women Act. (Do they actually think it is OK to beat women?) http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/10...

The Republican war on Women isn't restricted to reproductive rights it is turning into an actual physical war.

So you were there? You saw what happened, or are you being told what happened by your news outlet? So far, the only person alive who knows what happened that night is Zimmerman, unless there are eyewitnesses that have come forward.

The phrase "republican war on women" is just a catch phrase, a rallying cry, just like "hope and change" and "yes we can".

The judge in the case came to the same conclusion I did. The woman left the house, went into the garage, got a gun, and went back inside the house to confront her husband. "In his opinion, Alexander's decision to *re-enter* the house was "inconsistent with a person in genuine fear of his or her life."

12 months ago: The Republican War on women comes from the over 900 pieces of anti reproductive laws they have passed since coming to power in 2010. http://www.alternet.org/reproductivejust...

If Marrissa Alexander is disqualified for stand your ground by going out and getting something to defend herself with how, about Zimmerman continuing to stalk Travon after he was told not to? That should have disqualified him from using that as a defense and he should have been immediately arrested.

I don't have any problem with their being standards but they should be aplied evenly to both sexes and all races - they aren't.

What you have presented is a single case of a black woman being convicted after pleading self-defense, and a single case of a Hispanic/Jewish male being assumed innocent. I personally know two black women who killed their husbands and never spent a night in jail. Right here in Mississippi, the conservative bastion of the US.

To try to change the way abortion is conceptualized is not a war on women, it is a war on those who try to demean women, and who tell them its ok to be sex toys, "because if you slip up and get pregnant, we can just rip that little inconvenience right out of there."

12 months ago: And I thought this was about self defense being denied for a person who was threatened with death, not abortion.....

If she went to the garage and could not get out that way and had to return to the house and he confronted her again, she should have shot him between the eyes, not the ceiling.

You are making me feel better about the chances of Obama's defeat in a few months.

Thanks.

Keep it up. I am a racist, sexist, homophobe, bible and gun clinger. Tell me more.

The more violent men are the more they sexually abuse women. Nearly 1 in 5 women are sexually assaulted in the military now, a 65% increase. Sorta does sound like RED doesn't it? http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Military/20...

Marrissa Alexander could have accepted a plea bargain and gotten out in 2-3 years, but she thought that she hadn't done anything wrong. The system is designed so that if she had killed her husband she would have walked free, but if she tries to do the right humane thing she gets thrown in prison. This is the way our justice system works today - there is no justice. Mandatory sentencing laws take away any common sense.

We should eliminate the entire prison system because it throws victims in jail and teaches hardened criminals how to be more efficient. The restorative Justice System would be much better. https://www.justicefellowship.org/what-i...

The harm Jessica did scaring her husband should have been repaid by cooking a dinner for him, not depriving his children of a mother. The system will create kids with social and psychological problems. Is that good for society?

"The harm Jessica did scaring her husband should have been repaid by cooking a dinner for him, not depriving his children of a mother. The system will create kids with social and psychological problems. Is that good for society?"

...really, create kids with social and psychological problems? Why not have a gay couple adopt them? You touted that that would be a better option than having them raised by a single parent; because you also said in another post...

"Gay marriage has numerous benefits for the couple and for the children of these couples and also for society as a whole. By denying the couple the right to profess their love to each other and to publicly commit to each other, than you are encouraging promiscuity, degeneration, broken families, and children with only a single parent."

12 months ago: Exactly! The system has taken this woman's children including one who is just weeks old and they will either be turned over to the violent father who has been convicted of abusing the mother so he would probably abuse the children too, or they would be split up and bounced from one foster home to another throughout their life. Either option results in children who grow up to become problems for society. The kids would have been thousands of times better off with their loving mother. Why punish the children?

Their are thousands of orphans and foster children in the system who would benefit from a stable loving couple no matter what their sexual preference.
