Think how clever this is: the Education Establishment and the rest of the Left use the Constitution, specifically the purported separation of church and state, to drive all religious observances out of the public schools.
Okay, perhaps an argument can be made for that. But no argument can be made for what happens next.
Meanwhile, they sneak in their own religion. An alien, imported creed, you might say; basically a cult. For our discussion now it's best to think of this foreign religion as the Church of Socialism.
It has its doctrine, its ideology, its saints, its holy people, its view of the world and the universe, and humanity's place in that world. The Church of Socialism actually leaves very few things unknown and unformulated; its catechism is long and explicit. And this bossy Church routinely runs roughshod over the rights of students and parents.
You might object that the Church of Socialism is not a religion because it has no god. So? Buddhism has no god. Hinduism has many gods while Confucianism reveres dead ancestors. Taoists believe in a Way or a Path that must be followed, which is actually quite analogous to the mystical beliefs we find among Socialists. Point is, people worship many things. The Church of Socialism functions in the lives of its believers as a religion. That is, as an all-encompassing belief system based ultimately on faith. That's the decisive point. Adherents of the Church of Socialism can be the most uncompromising true believers you will ever encounter. Every detail of human existence has been worked out by their big visionaries (think: prophets). Members of the Church of Socialism do not need further thought. These zealots probably enjoy looking down on fundamentalist Christians from, for example, the wilds of West Virginia. But in every way the Church of Socialism is an exact mirror image of Bible Belt fundamentalism. All the important Truths are knowable, and Socialists know them. Just ask one of these preachy fanatics.
Allowing these people to infiltrate and influence the public schools is a clear violation of the principle whereby Church and State must be kept separated. That's what the ACLU is always telling us when they remove a Christmas tree from a school. Accordingly, the ACLU should immediately bring suits throughout the country to stop the Church of Socialism from conducting its religious activities on school properties.
We have had a very weird thing going on in America for the last hundred years. The Left, using all the legal trickery in the book, was able to defeat all the conventional and traditional religions. That is, drive them out into the countryside like so many sickly sheep. Meanwhile, throughout the nation's schools, the Church of Socialism insinuated its holy writ into every discussion and decision.
What, after all, was Progressive Education but another name for Education in the Service of the Church of Socialism? What was Social Studies but the Church of Socialism imposing its catechism on geography, history, economics, civics and anything else it could reach?
Some religionists stay private and modest. The Sufi, it is said, may be
anyone in a group or business; we can't tell by appearance. Members of the Church of Socialism scorn this unassuming demeanor, instead insisting in every circumstance that they are divinely right and everyone else must depart the planet.
However, Socialists have little confidence in their religion's appeal to most citizens. Therefore they must evangelize by legal hook and sophistical crook. Thus their contortions with the First Amendment. They worship at the altar of no law respecting an establishment of religion, but become deaf, dumb and blind when confronted by the implications of the next sentence: there can be no restraints on the free exercise of religion. Socialists don't like competition.
That is the game these hypocrites play, to stop the free exercise of all other religions, even as they work to establish themselves in a monopoly position. The ACLU must do its often-announced duty, and kick these totalitarian impostors out on the street. The Constitution requires it. A basic sense of fairness demands it. The Church of Socialism must be treated like any other religion. (For related analysis, see "25: Phooey on John Dewey" et al on
