Children of a Heartbreaking Society and Economy

More important than us, who is left for our children to look up to?
Once upon a time, children could keep their time of innocence and childhood dreams. There was creativity and imagination that could turn their bright thoughts into a reality to reach goals. They could go to a baseball game with their parents and with wide- eyes open say: "I want to be just like him when I grow up." Baseball the greatest sport I know. The kids would be excited and wear their Team's caps and shirts and have the best time of their lives. The ones who can afford to can. This isn't my point. Where has the wonder gone? Most people can't afford a ticket and are deprived.
There was a time children were focused on Presidents and Leaders in their studies. They could look up to them. Combined this with some childhood fantasy in Disney films and Parks, stories, etc., their personalities were healthy and well-rounded. They had time to be kids. The local heroes, celebrities, sportsmen set an example for our children, but today most have fallen short of their responsibility to these kids, aside from a few that are true to who they are. Many of these so called idols have fallen by the way side. Their lifestyles on a whole have been replaced by a grey area all the while making loads of money and practicing arrogance in their behavior daring anyone to challenge them. It's all about money.
The politicians show the world they don't care about what happens to anyone else's children. They are a bunch of talking heads with nothing to say of value. The great people who once set an example for the youth of America are no where to be found. Today our would-be idols lack substance and all the while influence and force innocent minds to see them as an example, all for the price of selling a ticket. Where has all the wholesomeness gone? It has been replaced by hard core films, violence, violent computer games, television violence, and brutality on the streets. The News media reports on everything that is wrong with the Country blasting the airways every single day and every minute of the day with depressing stories. The news never reports anything wholesome as a steady part of their daily routine. I think it would help America if they did.
On top of this the Government is chipping and cutting away at the educational programs crushing the children's chances of growing up to be good citizens in society as good providers and the leaders of tomorrow. They won't know how without example.
What happened to our America? Our children once had hopes and dreams and the focus was on fulfilling goals. There was good healthy competition. Family living and togetherness was right there helping every step of the way. Today these kids see the hardship and problems caused by the economy effecting their parents inability to thrive as a family. Today the news is that a high percentage of people are living single. Most of this is caused by no jobs and money problems. People runaway from problems. These children become the ward of single parents, either divorced, or widowed. How do they have any chance at being all they can be if that still exists in the remotest form in this Country? Single parents are dependent on jobs and the American belief that they are strong enough to pull their own weight. With the tearing down at the very fiber of this Country by greed, it is weakening our society and hurting our children and whatever chance they have at a future. They won't be children any more if this continues at such a pace. We will have nothing but wasted minds cluttered with confusion if something isn't done.

8 months ago: Sunny,

Good post! There is a desperation out there where the rubber hits the road... and you are right, there is a lack of role models who can help the next generation take it to the next. We all need to live, speak and strive to be more for those... and not just our own.

TCG.... What the heck was that? You seem like you have some baggage with Sunny, you sound like me with Altruist !:]

8 months ago: Dear Cypress, You are so jealous and envious of everyone that you can't write correctly to them.
I doubt whether anyone could look up to you. You don't know how to write. You can't say more than one liners that don't make sense. Sorry Cypress but that is my opinion. You should try being a better writer with more concern than envy.
8 months ago: What do they say about brevity?

Enjoy the new crew. I'm sure that you need some stroking.

You didn't have to read it. That's why you chase people away and a reason I delete all my comments. Are you a woman hater or do you have a crush? Come on now admit it.

Nice comments about my special needs child. Really telling about Ms. Prozacs mindset.
8 months ago: Oh yeah. Before Box does (NOT) delete this post. About my special needs child.

We have not received a single penny from the government or insurance for his needs.

Unlike you that are crying about not getting an additional unemployment check past 99 freaking weeks.

How about you pay your own way? Is that too much to ask?

Get a grip on your life. It ain't all Roses.

Maybe you should lower your expectations of your reality.

8 months ago: What are you talking about. You've got me mixed up. Maybe you should learn to read English and comprehend. I see that you are not a good representative of your State of Texas because a real Texan doesn't act like you. You aren't connecting the dots again. Stop and look at what you say to people. You don't think other people have problems and go through things the same as you do. Believe me, you are not alone, but we don't complain. I don't think I said anything about myself wanting more money from the State. I don't owe you an explanation. I've supported others who need it and aren't as fortunate as I am. You are grasping for straws. Yes, life is all Roses to me because I have good smart children who love their Mother with all their hearts.
Why don't you be the Good Guy your showed yourself to be before at least you made sense. You don't sound like a father to me or a family man. How come you are such a penny pincher? Don't you have much money? What have other States got to do with you? Everything you say is generic. I can see why woman won't be attracted to this site.
Box this person has constantly stalked me and said unreasonable hateful things to me and has attacked me personally. I wish for this to be deleted. Other people have physical sicknesses that they deal with. You're not the only one. Act like you are that kind of a person. You don't fit the scene you are painting for yourself as a stand up family man.

Yes, I am in touch with special needs children. I was one at the age of 2. It was a battle getting back and being strong physically. It was a battle trying to walk and stand. It took years and years, but I did it with the help of people who cared.

Back to the intent of the post. I agree that our kids and grandkids will have it much tougher than we.

For the first time in history our children will not be better off than we. Part of the reason for that is the huge National Debt the Republicans have built up because they refused to pay for what they bought. Our grandkids will have to pay that debt and the kids of today are already suffering because of educational cutbacks that are making higher education harder for all but the rich. They will not be able to get the good jobs and pull themselves up by their bootstraps like we did. The American dream is dead and all because the rich controls the government through bribes so they receive all of the benefits.

It is difficult for Americans to see what has been happening. It is sort of like the frog not jumping out of the cooking pot because it is so gradual. But Fareed Zacharia has a fresh set of eyes since he came from India. Time has A long but very astute article . http://www.time.com/time/magazine/articl...

Thom Hartman has an great book on how to restore the American dream. Here is a synopsis in a page or two. http://www.progressivereader.com/2010/11...

how do you say "delusional" on the left coast?
sunny2
sunny2
8 months ago: Al, Ok
I'm use to a family of tough strong men and true Americans that would blow these people out of the water. They could never measure up to them, and I live by their example. Some people are meant to be heroes and set a good example while others are useless excuses for humans.
You are right, and I know better than to react and to be drawn down to that level. There is an irrational kind of thinking set in their responses to my narrative.
The word "delusional" gets me. That is probably a word that fools would use on God if He walked the earth presently and judged them for their actions. I wonder if they would gang up and harass Him for His love for the children. I'll read the links you provided. I seem to rattle them more than they can do to me. I'll always win with that type.

8 months ago: It is a grand feeling to be able to help any child in need. We need some good people to step forward and help. There are so many young people out there scared and afraid of what the economy holds for their future. At one time, parents were able to provide a home and security for them, this is going to be a way of life that will be a thing of the past. It is being said that these kids are keeping up with the economical news each day. There is no time for them to be children because they live in fear of what will happen to their parents and to the threat of extinction of their future in America.

8 months ago: Al, I read the links that you provided. Good Articles. Thank you. It establishes what we have been saying all along. What do people want to hear? They want to sweep the problem under the rug. No one can close off their minds to this troublesome problem. Our children deserve better than this and have a right to reach for the stars.

Thom Hartmann is the top-rated progressive radio talk show host in the country. (He's also the 10th-ranked overall, which tells you something–something you probably already knew–about the relative clout of progressive talk radio.) He deserves his success: he's smart, he's committed, he invites people on his show who disagree with him and is never happier than when arguing (forcefully but civilly) with them.

8 months ago: "For the first time in history our children will not be better off than we"

That's one of the most nonsensical and pessimistic perspectives I've ever heard. Glad not everyone thinks that way.

I have very confidence that my children will be better off than I. Thank God, I am doing quite well on all fronts and am passing down that legacy to my kids. That is what we all need to do to be truly successful.

Spiritually, physically, financially, socially - we need to hit on all cylinders.

My children are getting a great education. One is now in college and the other just started high school. They are honor students and hang out with peers of like mind and vision. My wife and I spend much time with them raising them and educating them on the important things in life.

Children live what they learn. If they learn to be pessimistic and negative, that is what they will live out. If they come from a perspective of understanding the Blessing there is nothing this world can throw at them that will ultimately discourage and destroy them.

This economic system cannot keep a winner down. It's all a matter of perspective and persistence. If we don't have a clue as to our puspose and our source of supply it's very easy to get dragged down into the negativity of this fallen world.

As far as role models, there are plenty of them out there. You just have to know where to look. The first role models should be the parents. Work it from there.

I buy sports jerseys for my kids, but they are usually retro. Jersey by folks that have proven themselves on and off the field/court. Folks that show tremendous ability in their sport, their lives and their philanthropy. I refuse to buy just any old jersey because of popularity. That's just dumb.

We truly have a lot to be thankful for and praise our Maker for. It's unfortunate that some just don't see it and want to try and rain on others parade. That's too bad for them.

Nice piece Sunny. It made me reflect and think about how truly fortunate I am and actually inspires me to strive that much harder for a better tomorrow for my family and anyone else I can bring along.

8 months ago: I don't know what to say anymore. I don't know whether I'm offending someone, or if I shouldn't talk at all. I am close to an area that I see much going on where people can't get on their feet and the kids wind up the same. I worked hard to put my child into college, and I am amazed at the strength of character and the desire to move forward to make a difference. I'm amazed how smart and intelligent she is. She has this wonderful gift for loving life and seeing the beauty in it. She works for the betterment of people. My argument is that the majority don't have a chance without knowing what they will face if something doesn't change for the better. Many don't have the opportunity to experience life the way we have or the chance to have good solid parents to help them learn and give them chances. That is most of the children out there. Everything that we once valued has gone down hill. Many don't have anything except someone to look up to give them incentive, and many times it isn't parents because they never had opportunity.
All children in this World are one. Before children were children in every sense, we don't know what they are exposed to anymore. The threat of violence makes people grow up fast. They way our society is moving at this pace unsure of the future because of the Leaders we have, kids are getting to see a life style that is less than desirable. Opportunity knocks when there is a economy that will welcome it. America is not as innocent any more after 911. Kids know this. If there isn't a place for the kids after college years ,and after all the time put into studying to make a place for themselves, what is the answer. I know you are great parents and God's goodness will look over you and care for you and your family. We have to keep a constant vigilence and watch on what is going on around us. We don't want only the rich to flourish or people with connections. We want everyone to have opportunity. We do have fallen idols, and all we have left is a much of politicians that don't set good examples. We do all we can for our kids and parents should set the example, of course, but when they fail in this economy what chances do the kids have. Some are going to fall by the wayside. It's important for those who have influence to be good role models.
8 months ago: Life is difficult. Once we understand and embrace that, it gets easier.

If one stops caring or sharing for fear of offense we will have effectively neutralized any positive influence our thoughts and ideas may have on others who can appreciate them. I get blasted all the time and that does not stop me. I know what I have to share has significant impact or it wouldn't get so much attention.

Objections, spam and venom can actually be encouraging when looked at in proper context.

This is a wonderful world and we all can have a wonderful future. Will it be easy? No. Will it take hard work? Yes. Is it possible? You better believe it is.

We must persist until we get what we know has been promised to us. And of course, we must not give undue attention to the negative folks and the haters. All they will do is attempt to discourage and drag folks down into their own personal hell. A hell which oft times is of their own making by their own words, attitudes and actions.

We are to rule over our circumstances not the other way around. It's all under our feet.

8 months ago: I think when I was saying the words More important than us I should of explained more. What I meant was in some families whatever they do and how much they may care, they can't stop outside influences at times from making their children stray. Having good role models out there the more the better. There haven't been many lately. Doesn't seem to be the trend.

On the flip side of the coin, you have children that grow up not so fortunate in some neighborhoods and have nothing more than a gang leader to idolize because they don't have good families to fall back on or anyone else to look up to. Sometimes the area where they live alone can make younger people participate as part of a gang and look up to them. They become their family. They're trapped in a situation and nobody is there. By then it is too late to help.

Right! Uh Left!...Flip-Flop.

Dang.
8 months ago: "The American dream is dead and all because the rich controls the government through bribes so they receive all of the benefits."

That sounds about as ghetto as Al gets. "The rich controls the government."

When has the rich not been in control of the US government? Before 1776 maybe?

Like, Buffett and oBLAHma.

Should we expand the rich liberal list fo Al?
8 months ago: He's post and run.

No way on earth he'll come back here to defend what he posted. I wonder if he's telling his kids and grandkids that they have no hope and thay they will not have it better than he. You think?
