Last time I wrote about AB131 the Donahoe Higher Education Act, better known as the California Dream Act, and how it was being ready to be sent through the California Senate for a vote. Well, today the treasonous Senators passed the Bill and sent it up for the Governor's approval. Given that Jerry Brown has been a vocal supporter of such proposals in the past, I think the Bill is going to become law.
In short what the bill does is eliminate the citizenship or legal status requirements in order to apply for and receive financial aid to include loans and grants for attending higher education.
My problem with this bill is that it siphons American tax payer dollars to fund the education of non-Americans. If there was an endless pool of money and doing this would affect Americans in any way, then I would probably not care as much. However the opposite is true. The pool is very finite and unfortunately every dollar that will go to an "undocumented" will be one less dollar for needy Americans (of all races and ethnicities). There is no way around this fact; for every immigrant person that goes to college under this program will be one American that will be denied!
All this comes at a time when the California Politicians cry and scream that they are going to have to cut programs (especially in education), and that they have to raise taxes on its already overburdened citizenry. So on the one hand we have no money, but on the other we have money to give away!
What confuses me the most is the silence by the people and the media? Where is the outcry—the outrage!? Surely I cannot be the only one that feels that it is wrong to take money away from young American men and women (once again of all colors and ethnicities) and give that money to others. Surely there are enough poor Americans in California struggling that could benefit from a college education—or did I miss something?
Opponents will say that this is about opportunity—and I whole heartedly agree! However I think this is about stealing the opportunity of American kids and giving that opportunity away! I guess if thinking that giving preference to Americans in America is wrong—then I will proudly be wrong everyday!!!
