"Atheists Say Street Sign Honoring 9/11 Heroes 'Really Insulting to Us'...
It is improper for the city to endorse the view that Heaven exists... it links Christianity and heroism" ... "The problem with the sign is that you're assuming that you know what they felt deep down... you're assuming that they even believed in Heaven (David Silverman)
http://www.christianpost.com/news/atheis...

Local atheists also insisted that public signs should be non-sectarian. "It falls under the umbrella of Church and state," added Ken Bronstein of NYC Atheists."

What part of the Constitution is violated by this street sign? There is no law established that favors one religion over another or none at all. The News Commentator said that it seems "That those on the "left" aren't going to be happy, until we actually remove the name of God from the public square... we can't have Nativity scenes, kids can't mention God in their valedictorian address... and you can't have this honor, for these brave men... that nobody except a few people... that don't even live on the street...
a.. are offended about... Why? Where is the tolerance?"

Where is the logic?

The problem is that the government is not supposed to show favoritism.

24 months ago: Al,

Where was the OUTRAGE when New York had a couple of streets named after Santa? What if some people don't believe in Santa? That is "favoritism"!

Two New York streets named after Santa Claus...

Or should we demand to insist that the victims have gone to Valhalla, regardless of their beliefs.

24 months ago: Stan,

No one from any of the families associated with this tragic loss are contrary to the sign being posted... so it should be of less concern to those who don't have anything whatsoever to do with it, or even live near it.
24 months ago: Some folks need to get a life.

If they named the street "Nirvana Way" those dummkopfs wouldn't say a thing and everyone here knows it.

BTW- there should be no problem with that tag either.
24 months ago: Sorry Huey my bro,

They named a city Nirvana with signs and everything !:]

24 months ago: Love that one TR!! Why are these guys messing with small fry like a street when you have an entire park to shot at!! In fact I would love to see the whole bunch at the park with signs marching back and forth and back and forth........for days, and days and days.......................really, I would watch that on T.V. Is that bad? : )
24 months ago: I thought that "Hells Gate State" park was maybe somewhere in Death valley or something. I just noticed it was in Idaho and after looking at the link I've decided if they tote signs at this park they should be made of heavy wood planks and weigh about 30 pounds each. And no breaks...... That I would watch maybe.
24 months ago: I think just about every city, town and village has a 'Church Street'. Many have an 'Angel Road'. What about all the schools named 'Saint xx'?

I think this is going a little overboard. This is not to espouse a particular religious tradition, many have the concept of heaven. I have a good friend who is an atheist who says heaven is a state of contentment in this life not the next.

I think the atheist who want to ban this are doing exactly what they claim is being done to them. Making assumptions and imposing those assumptions on other people. The street name should be left up to the local community. If no one there opposes it, then it shouldn't be an issue.

24 months ago: Like that grandbaby I've been taking care of since last October. Should my daughter and son-on-law have to change his name because someone might be offended? Or how about folks related to the leader of the HMS Bounty mutineers? His FAMILY name was Christian. I once had a good friend and co-worker with a family name of Christy. Should they have to find a new surname?

When does it stop?

Oh, BTW, in Germany parents have to run prospective names for a coming child by some county council or suchlike to get approval for the name. Seems they want to make sure the kid isn't saddled with a name that might bring ridicule upon them. I don't like the idea of having to get some bureaucrat's approval to name your kid but it might save some from names like Forest Grove or Kendal Kenneth Kenney (get it? all his names are "Kenny") or Merry (not Mary) Christmas. And imagine Frank Zappa trying to get approval for HIS kids whom he stuck with the monikers Moon Unit, Dweezil, Ahmet Rodan, and Diva.

24 months ago: Yeah, Lukewarm Lane and Atheist Ave. haven't really caught on that well. As far as Altruist's statement about the government not showing favoritism, that only applies to the Federal government. The idiots in the article that say it falls under the umbrella of Church and State should read their Constitution. Nowhere in the Constitution does it say that individual local or State governments can not favor one belief structure over another. In fact, in no wise does the phrase "separation of church and state" even appear in the Constitution.

The actual wording is, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof."

Yeah dum dum, the wording I quoted is in the Amendments, can you guess which one? Yes the First, which I will quote in its entirety:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

23 months ago: Signs like this get attention because they aid the atheist movement in waking up the sleeping atheist and getting them out and around, active and attentive.

Active Atheism is increasing in the West and people, previously quiet, are now speaking out regarding Christianity's arrogance, bigotry, hatred, violence and ignorance.

We are not interested in your friend in the sky, your guilt, your need for fear and salvation. We don't believe in your zombie savior or your lake of fire.

The time has come and this sign may have woke a few people to the egregious incursions Christianity has made in our society. Awake! Throw the buggers out...

23 months ago: Well, atheists in America are not steeped in hatred, violence, bigotry etc.

They certainly laugh a lot more than the average and all my interactions with them have proved the high rate of intelligence attributed to atheists.

Of all the high IQ societies and groups I have affiliated with, more than 95% of them were atheist and some agnostics, but mostly atheists.

In fact, a few obnoxious Christians had to be ejected from a party or a camp-out...the fundies are quite obnoxious you know?

The malice, hatred and deviousness of our local Fundie pastor is par for the course in small towns. He isn't very well liked and a lot of his followers just can't understand why...they never see the other face or hear the LIES...thats simple to understand. Fundies are pretty gullible and you have every right and perogative to laugh out loud when their minister runs off with the church funds.

My Spiritual Humanist Ministerial License is stapled to my front fence and when questioned I explain that ANYONE can get a ministers license, there is nothing special about it at all. Anyone is welcome in a Bible school, the prequisite is the entrance fees only...you don't even need a grade school or high school education.

Our fundie pastor went to some obscure Bible school for 4 years and tells me it is a better education than Harvard or Stanford or Berkley or....

One of the members of the Board that oversees some of these little churches here in the Pacific Northwest got his geologist's doctorate years ago yet found he was not welcome in Geology society. His doctorate didn't bring evolution into play because obviously, as had happened to him all through his studies, if he did so the paper was rejected. So, he got his doctorate by lying...and it resulted in him getting the snub in every paper & journal, university and Geological societies. Sooooooooooooooo...

He Turned to the role of Fundamental minister and glories in all the Gee Whizzes, pats on the back and female adulation of a real Creationist Geologist

This is a true story.

By the way, out local pastor admitted to me that the only job he could get after graduating from his "college" was with Christian oriented businesses and service organizations...Most of America, when it comes to practical applications, reject fundie degrees as "inappropriate" or not far reaching in content or simply "Thanks, we will call you"

Poor bastards...dumber than a box of hammers.
23 months ago: 0wlafaye,

This is so cool... being "dumber than a box of hammers" ...I get to edumacate a full-blown genius! Do you know what a bigot even is? You throw the term around, but it totally describes Atheists like you who are intolerant of those who believe in a god or in Almighty God... in the face of all the religions in the world...
Atheists are quite the narrow-minded group, wouldn't you say ?:]

"A bigot is a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices, especially one exhibiting intolerance, and animosity toward those of differing beliefs. The predominant usage in modern English refers to persons hostile to those of differing race, ethnicity, religion or spirituality, nationality, inter-regional prejudice, gender and sexual orientation, homelessness, various medical disorders particularly behavioral disorders and addictive disorders. Forms of bigotry may have a related ideology or world views."

23 months ago: 0wlafaye,

You say... "Of all the high IQ societies and groups I have affiliated with, more than 95% of them were atheist and some agnostics, but mostly atheists" ...this is why you squirm when racism like Darwinism is exposed... all these know-it-all snobs like defending issues like abortion, sex-slavery, and worse... seems to be a big "owl" up at the Bohemian Club... if you are as "made" as you claim, your name should be on the list, don't you think... or don't you think??

23 months ago: So, you say most atheists are not steeped in violence, etc. Niether are most Christians. But you, however, appear to have a violent and hateful bent. You said, referring to Christians, "Throw the buggers out.", indicating violence by the action of throwing them out, and hatred by the use of a vulgarity in reference to them.

So what does all this mean? Are you bringing yourself down to their level, or are you elevating them to yours? If you are so superior, what care you what your inferiors are doing? Are you not quick enough to outsmart them at every turn? And why do you need the constant affirmation of your supposed superior intellect? Does it make you feel safer or more worthy to have the approval of an organization? There are many clubs you can not be in, and many of them could kick your club's butt at any time. Ding ding, I think we have a winner. That's why you sit home alone behind the safety of your keyboard and spread your hatred.
You are not a shining example of humanity, and that's why you have not been chosen to represent mankind in any capacity.

PS, I'd match IQs with you any day.
