For years, the belief that someone/something is up there somewhere watching over 7billion people's every move and upon death our spirits will rise up or down depending on our actions while we lived on this world. That might or might not be true but think about this, If no one was to believe in God, the crime rate in the whole world will decrease almost dramatically. Everyone will just do anything they want and the life expectancy of the "weak" will be reduced and justice will just go downhill.

There are people called atheist who do not believe in a God and they have to right to do so but let me ask you this, how did this world or the galaxy even come to existence. You can't tell me everything just started from nothing just like that! I personally do not believe in religion but I do believe in God. I do not think he is a physical being because if we had a WHOLE galaxy with different planets, what would make you think that we are the only ones that exist. So logically, why should God be in the form of a human being and not represent every living thing in the whole galaxy.

Most people just believe in whatever someone they trust tells them failing to find out themselves. I just don't listen to someone talk about something supernatural and I will believe it and walk away,I will look into it and find out myself. What I am saying is that people need to look into things and find out themselves before just believing in it. I have come to find out personally that it is quite rewarding, it changes the way you think and the way you view things, it makes you different.

They have relatively little crime and an a high sense of morality yet they are technically a nation of atheists. Conversely the US that claims to be 85% Christian, has some of the highest crime rates and more people in prison than any other place in the world, We have a totally amoral capitalist system that is driven by immoral advertising. We have An immoral political system that is driven by legalized bribery and corruption. Half the marriages in the country end in divorce and we think nothing of condemning 50 million people to death because they can't afford health care, and have written off fifteen million homeless. That doesn't sound like believing in god is helping much.

All religions have moral codes that ask people to do what is best for society. That is what government and laws do. Who needs religion? In fact atheists act morally because that is the right thing to do, not because they are afraid of going to hell. I think that stance is morally superior.

I think you are right that if there is such a thing as God, she wouldn't have chosen an obscure cruel desert tribe as it's chosen people. If that being is responsible for the gazillians of other worlds and civilizations out there she probably looks more like the Flying Spaghetti Monster than the old man with a beard.

Instead of the ten commandments defining morality, I like the Eight "I'd Really Rather You Didn'ts"

This will lead me to think that religion is a good thing as it brings and keeps some form of justice.I noticed that some big leaders might not believe in God, but they do things secretly in Gods name that is not right and i have noticed the mistake i have made there in the first one, I should have researched further. You put a very solid/nice point in your first paragraph.
4 months ago: You make some interesting points and some astute observations. I'm looking forward to reading more of what you have to say.

FYI - Al is an orthodox atheist. More angst than some and less than others. Has a problem with the Jewish religion. Good guy, but does not think outside the box too often when it come to theology. Bad Catholic school memories.

BTW - "Adventure Time" rocks. One of the most innovative and best new cartoons out there.

4 months ago: Hey Al, how about North Korea and Nazi Germany. Their crime rates were thousand times lower than in modern democracies.

I guess that facing a prospect of concentration camp on a suspicion of some pretend crime does wonders for controlling crime rate...

Hey NDAA allows indefinite imprisonment and torture without trial. Does that mean that the crime rate will become lower in the future?

Al, The United States has more people in prison because we put people there for idiotic reasons.

Morality is not directly correlated to religion. I absolutely 100% do not believe in the existence of any Deity yet somehow I manage to not rob people, steal things, shoot people, rape people and so on and so forth...how on earth is this possible???

But woe to those who question religious authority or question accepted dogma, or break the rules.

They are particularly violent to those of the same religion who express different thoughts about the religious dogma. These Heretics are treated much worse than members of different religions. The atrocities and the terrible tortures of the inquisition demonstrate the depths of how bad people can be.

So you don't generally do bad things to those you know. (except most rapes, violence and murders are among the family). Helping fellow Christians is called tribalism.

But what happens to those outside of the tribe? the tribalism can actually encourage hostility to these "others".

This aspect of religion, intolerance of others, negates any of the good done by having strict moral standards. This is what is responsible for most wars. That is why the Protestants and Catholics created so many wars and that is why the Sunnis and Shiites are causing so many problems now.

Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, all condemn killing. but they all kill outsiders and commit outrages to those outside of the religion, and they are even worse to those they consider heretics in the same religion.

Morality is directly related to religion. Those of us who are agnostics or atheists do not hate, kill torture the folk who disagree with us.

~You can replace the word Church and Religion in the above with the word College Fraternity/Sorority and come to the same end. I never have, in my whole life, understood why people think that if somebody does something good for a community that they are doing so because of religion.

"Morality is directly related to religion. Those of us who are agnostics or atheists do not hate, kill torture the folk who disagree with us."

~First of all it is not necessarily directly related. Be careful with that second part, just because Atheists don't kill in the name of does not mean that they do not kill. Stalin was an Atheist...

If you really believe that statement, you have lost your mind.

History is replete with examples of those who considered themselves to be atheist or agnostic who have tortured, skinned, killed, raped, bruatlized and murdered those who disagreed with them.

Sin is sin regardless of who commits it. Makes no difference. All are guilty.

Whether we believe, or not, we all are under the same roof. That must mean something.

This has to be one of the biggets lies I have ever heard in my entire life.

Just re-read this since I was re-reading all of Rockme's posts.

About as dishonest and as stupid as it gets. Tell that to Stalin, Pol Pot and Mao.

Had to comment on that again.
