Are Christians Narrow Minded?

I HAVE been accused of many things, yes, being narrow minded is one of them...
in defense, I plead arrogance! When I am "right" there is little someone else can do but provide me some extra information to help me see things in a different light. Many times I am too busy shoring-up my stand to consider the contrary... but there are those rare times someone has penetrated my defense... with love.

WHO can defend against such a lowly attack? Bringing out the "big guns" of love is just cheating... I mean, who does that anymore? My wife. Whether or not I want to admit it, she has a way of listening... and then even before she says a word... I'm beat, she has the look of patience... yet with a question attached. Don't you love people who can listen? I mean really listen, like they have nothing to loose? Just wanting you to do better, be better equipped... no point to make... only your best in mind. Days like that, nothing can throttle me better than the love of patience... it really opens the eyes to the loafers in my mouth... and the logging truck in my eye.

BUT today was a good day... nothing to loose... listening to someone "tell it like it is" ...about everyone being "narrow minded". Well, I don't only patron the act... but "I say, I say... I resemble that remark!" Some guys just have it in spades when it comes to gab... no filter, and not a hint of brakes... my motto is "GO FOR IT!" That is one reason I like Rant/Rave ...it seems I am in good company too !:]

"ARE Christians Narrow Minded? ...Yes! But so is everyone else. They like everyone else think that their world view is correct. Christians are narrow minded as well, because Jesus is narrow minded. In fact Jesus said... "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life, no one gets to the Father except through me."

11 months ago: I like this rant. Just as you said, Christians are narrow minded, but no more than anyone else. It has little to do with Christianity, per se, and more to do with the human tendency to find a set of beliefs to adhere to.

Many different groups are guilty of this. Democrats, Republicans, conservatives, and liberals, scientists and many others. Thats why groups are so popular and do so well. It's the mark of an intellectual human being to be able to stand back and assess a situation before making a judgement based on its alignment with any group, be it political, religious, or otherwise.

Very well said.

Oft times here at RR gross generalizations are made, sweeping condemnations issued and knee-jerk prejudicial responses fly like paper airplanes.

There are very few groups of people that are absolutely monolithic and fit into nice little pigeon holes.

Being narrow-minded in many instances is good. However that should never keep a person from having a willingness to lend an open and honest ear.

No, perhaps delusional though!
11 months ago: DJ,

It's not really a confessional... but none the less... we accept your transparency !:]
11 months ago:
Do I detect a barb TB? Naah more like insecurity. But you are a bit transparent.
Huey another word for peculiar is strange!

Boy, you guys are easy!
11 months ago: Strange is fine. Who wants to be like the world? Ugh!

BTW - I'm never easy.

The world is a strange place or haven't you noticed! You are not as easy to play with as TB but you are still easy. I just have to be more selective of the buttons I press. With TB any button that says religion gets him.
11 months ago: DJ,

Actually you have me pegged. I do take faith seriously, many people are duped into following perverted renditions of Biblical truth... and end up somewhere other than God intended. IF you job is to mock those who do have the truth, in order for them to bring the light of the scriptures... stop playing the devils advocate and just honestly pick a side. I thing you are smarter than that. Faith is not a game or a business.
11 months ago: I've been intrigued by your brand of Christianity since you first tried to bait me. I have to press buttons to see what makes you tick (or get ticked off) so to speak. As I told Huey elsewhere, "I don't see Christianity as one big ecumenical pie" To me it is split into a gazillion sectarian pieces. My salvation doesn't depend on your version of Christianity. My faith is sealed by my trust in the living God, not your approval. You are welcome to grill me, interrogate me, bait me, try to trap me or trip me up. I don't care! I know what I believe and why and I can back it up so as I said before, "Bring it on" I find the back and forth sparing encouraging to my faith. It sharpens my sward and reaffirms my conviction. It should be doing the same for you so I don't know what you are concerned about.
11 months ago: The world is not strange, it's sick. Big difference.

11 months ago: Some things in the world are sick, depraved even others are just plain strange, weird and bizarre. Take for instance Passion processions. They are starting to resemble more and more the Hindu processions for Shiva. Any time people beat, cut and mutilate their bodies in the name of religion something is wrong with them!

11 months ago: Narrow mindedness should be no more a badge of courage than being anti-political correctness.

What I really have an issue with is the contradition between calling oneself a Chrisitan (worshipper of Christ) and not following his lead. Is there any case in Christian mythology to believe that narrow-mindedness was one of Christ's traits? It would seem to me that Jesus was anything but narrow-minded especially for the times in which he lived. It would be quite an interesting thing for Chrisitans if, rather than following a Bible which may or may not have anything to do with God and what God wanted, and, instead, they strove to live their lives like Jesus. How many of today's Christians would die for the sins of all their brothers? How many are out fighting for the sick, the hungry, the poor? Think of the life of Mother Theresa vs. all of these people who preach what good Christians are, should believe, and should do. Did she or Jesus ever exhibit the kind of rabid hatred it must take to kill a doctor who perfumes abortions? Did either work hard all year for disposable income to send to California to fund the passing of Prop 8? Did either say, "Ignore the planet for she is just a rock for you to pollute, destroy, and cannibalize?" Did they carry weapons and fight for their right to bear them?

I saw a bumper sticker the other day that took me by surprise. It read, "Was Jesus a Socialist or a Capitalist?" The sticker was next to a "McCain/Palin" sticker and a "NObama" sticker. I didn't know what to make of this.
11 months ago: Sure there are many so-called Christians that are not walking the walk, just talking the talk. That in no way negates the efforts of those of us who are following Christ's lead. I wish there were more, but there are plenty of us.

Only the blind lumps everyone in the same bucket.

CRR - I wouldn't know what to make of that sticker either, because Jesus is neither a Capitalist or a Socialist - He is LORD.

11 months ago: CR,

You are one of the most educated people on this site, but you said...

"It would be quite an interesting thing for Chrisitans if, rather than following a Bible which may or may not have anything to do with God and what God wanted, and, instead, they strove to live their lives like Jesus."

..."rather than following a Bible... live their lives like Jesus" ...huh? The Bible tells us how Jesus lived and we would be following a Bible if we were to live as He did. That just doesn't make sense.... but if you are saying that more "Christians" need to live out their faith instead of just preaching... you have my vote.

10 months ago: How about: "Be good for goodness sake"?

Then you wouldn't need a magical, invisible, flying zombie friend in the sky.
10 months ago: 0wlafaye,

"Be good for goodness sake"?? Sounds like a line from Santa Claus is coming to town... talk about your flying zombie !:]
11 months ago: Coloranter, don't be miffed or stupefied by the Christian Contradiction. Christianity is a repository of labels. Pick one!

10 months ago: 0wlafaye,

I never said I wasn't cheeky... or outright ignorant, BTW have you seen what I have been doing with your "name"?
11 months ago: Matthew 17:11

"Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it."

Even a dead fish can float downstream. We're created for greater than that.
11 months ago: I said it before, but Huey.... You rock with real rocks !:]
(and you don't need to use the fake Johnson types)
11 months ago: Huey,
You are a mature Christian, right? You are educated in the faith and so when you quote scripture that says, "enter through the narrow gate" you know exactly what that means, right? But you are taking for granted that there are people in this site who are not only not mature Christians but not Christians at all and that your intellectual quote of scripture means nothing to them, so how about you break it down in layman's terms that even a child could understand and stop trying to impress TB who is busy patting your back and his?
11 months ago: Since you know so much, why don't you?

Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime.

I think that quote is pretty self explanatory to anyone who exercises even a little of their God given intelligence.

I don't have time to do everyone else's homework. If they really want to know they can look it up and find out the exact context and why Jesus used the word "narrow". That would show a keen interest in wanting to know the truth rather than waiting to be spoon fed.

10 months ago: Hey Huey, you promised to show us proof of God's existence remember? Just when are you going to?
10 months ago: 0wlafaye,

Proof is just a prayer away... open your eyes, there is nothing "random" about our universe, all ordered and balanced...

1 The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
2 Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they reveal knowledge.
3 They have no speech, they use no words;
no sound is heard from them.
4 Yet their voice[b] goes out into all the earth,
their words to the ends of the world. (Psalm 19:1-4)
11 months ago: So if it is okay for you to just drop and run why do you then not extend the same courtesy to me? I'll tell you why! It is because you are confident in your belief and you want to bolster your credibility by trying to prove me wrong. That's okay, I already knew that. That is why I put out what I do. I enjoy the heat of the kitchen. I remember helping my Grandma down south cook those greens in the heat of summer. In her words, "Baby, it's almost dinner time!"
11 months ago: DJ,

Nobody is just trying to prove someone wrong... we all need to grow when we are challenged, it causes us to study our Bibles more and pray more, seeking His will and not just our own. If I find out I am wrong again, it just inspires me to do better.

10 months ago: @TB You don't grow reading the Bible...you enter a side track and spend your life there blowing little whisps of steam out your noodle. All knowledge stops when people refer BACK to their Bible...thats why it is called the BABBLE.
10 months ago: 0wlafaye,

I haven't always read the Bible... for the most part my life was in direct contravention to it, but when I got off my "high-horse" and humbled myself long enough to consider it's truths... my life took a change for the better. People mock the Bible with only second-hand knowledge of it... but if you want to understand, invite Jesus Christ to enlighten you.
