I love anime. It's my favorite type of animation (not including Disney movies). I like the details, the designs, the stories, the action, and the music that usually accompanies it. As someone who appreciates art, I greatly enjoy anime a lot. I like manga as well, but another reason I like anime a lot is because in anime I get to see the characters in color. I get to see them move, and hear them speak (and hear the environments in general). Manga is just the comic form (also called 'graphic novels' now, for some reason).
As awesome as I think anime is, I do also have issues with part of it. For one thing, I wish the characters, especially the females, would be more physically diverse beyond just hair and eye color. I'd like to see more variety in skin colors and body types and hair styles. The excuse people give is that anime is Japanese. That's BS. If a series takes place in Japan, that's fine, as like 98% of the population has more or less the same general appearance. But when the setting isn't in Japan, why make all the characters the same? Japan isn't closed off like it once was. They have access to movies and Internet and other people and cultures around the world, so there's no reason why the characters can't be more diverse than they are.
I also get tired of seeing giant breasts a lot of the time, but that's just me. I view giant breasts the way I view blonde and straight hair. It's everywhere, and overrated. The thing that gets me about the giant breasts is that the girls have NO body fat, but walk around with two huge watermelons in their chests, and the breasts don't cause discomfort or sag. Nope, they're all light and perky like a pair of As or smaller Bs. Even fake breasts, if large enough, cause discomfort and sag.
Whether dubbed or in the original language, I can't stand it when characters have voices that don't fit (and it's serious). The best example I can think of at the moment are the Dragon Ball series (Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT). Goku is more or less the strongest man in the series, and his oldest son Gohan grows up to be very powerful as well (and Goten is strong, too). So why, in the original Japanese, do they have the voices of little girls? Kenshin Himura (from 'Rurouni Kenshin'/'Samurai X') is another example. He's a grown man and sounds like a girl. Sometimes the opposite happens. In the original Japanese, in 'Naruto', the character of Neji was 13 when introduced and sounds like a 30 year old man (his dub voice is SOOO much better, in my opinion- it sounds more age-appropriate). Speaking of girl voices, it's annoying when the female characters don't have the right voices either. Little girl voices are only cute when younger females have them, but I have no clue why teenage girls and grown women have them. Or sometimes, a female character has a voice that's too old for her, and she ends up sounding like she's 25-30 when she's really 12 (this happens in dubbing sometimes as well).
I also don't like when in a dub, the characters' names aren't pronounced correctly. A recent example is 'Bleach'. In the dub, the emphasis is placed on the wrong part of the name. Renji Abarai. His last name, Abarai, is supposed to be pronounced as "AH-ba-rai" with the emphasis on the beginning of the name. But in the dub, it's frequently mispronounced as "a-BAR-eye". Rangiku Matsumoto's first name is supposed to be pronounced as "RAHN-gi-ku" (again, emphasis is on the first part), but gets pronounced as "ron-GEE-koo". Lots of names are messed up. What, the dubbers can't be bothered to pay attention to pronunciation?
Those are just minor issues I have with anime. My major annoyance is with some of the fans. There's fans like me, who can appreciate the genre for what it is, and then there are UBER FANS. These are the stereotypical fans. They proudly call themselves 'Otaku', live only for anime and manga (and nothing else), dress as characters or in 'anime garb' frequently, learn Japanese because they're wannabees, and dream of going to (often to live there) Japan. To them, Japan is a magical land of sparkles and rainbows, sexy school girls and gorgeous girly-boys, where it rains ramen and pocky and sake all day, everyone perpetually looks 15 to 20 years of age, and even the older people look 30. It's fine to be excited about something, but they take it to ultra levels of insanity.
Cosplayers, I know the characters have cool outfits, but unless you're going to or participating in a convention or party or some other anime-themed event, please stop walking around daily dressed as Naruto, Goku, any school girl, etc. Please stop. It's embarrassing, and the accessories and sometimes the clothing, will get you in trouble. About the clothing. If you're going to dress as a character, then DO THAT CHARACTER JUSTICE. Put real effort into the look and make sure YOUR body is flattered in the costume.
Fan-artists, if your artistic skills aren't so great, practice. PRACTICE. PRACTICE.
Fan-fic writers, same with you. If you're going to share your work with others, make sure it's good. Also, PLEASE STOP TURNING EVERY SCENE INTO SOME FORM OF PORN.
Speaking of porn (don't worry, I'll keep things clean), why do some fans feel the need to either disturbingly lust after characters, or make all the characters homosexual? These perverts are the most annoying of fans. Let them have their way, and sooner or later kids get involved, inanimate objects, and everyone's doing everyone else. They frequently like to pair the most UNLIKELY characters together. NEWSFLASH: Japan is NOT some gay paradise for your fantasies, people! Knock it off!
The pretend know-it-alls. Always going on and on about "dubs suck" and "subs are best" and they don't even know the first thing about the language in Japan, let alone the culture or history. You idiots hush. If not for the dubs, anime would not be as popular as it is now, and if you think dubs are so bad, let's see YOU accurately translate an anime from the original into another language. Dubs have gotten MUCH better since back in the day ('Cowboy Bebop', 'Death Note', 'FullMetal Alchemist' and 'Gunslinger Girl', just to name a few, are MUCH better-quality dubs over say, 'Vampire Princess Miyu' or 'Voltron' or the original 'Speed Racer'). Sometimes the dubbed voices are better than the original.
Wannabe 'Manga-ka' people, get over it. You have almost NO CHANCE of going over to Japan and starting up a successful manga or anime and becoming the next Rumiko Takahashi or Akira Toriyama. You'd be better off staying where you are and trying to create the next 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' or 'Teen Titans' or something.
If you don't know the language in Japan, STOP USING RANDOM WORDS OR FRACTURED PHRASES IN YOUR EVERYDAY CONVERSATIONS. It's just stupid, and just as you might giggle over hearing and seeing 'Engrish', fluent speakers and writers of Japanese language are laughing at you. Just say "Thank you" instead of "Arigatou", "cute" instead of "kawaii" and what's with the -desu, -chan, -san and -sama you keep throwing around? If you ARE trying to learn Japanese, please don't let anime (and manga) be the sole reason. Sure, anime (and manga) are popular in Japan, but that's not all the Japanese watch or sit around reading all day.
It's fine to love anime, but stop glorifying the Japanese. They're not perfect, and they have problems like everyone else, and I hate to break it to you, but most people in Japan do NOT look like the idealized images you see. If you go to Japan and act based on what you saw in anime, they'll probably look at you strange or think you need a mental evaluation. Anime of course has Japanese culture in it, but please don't base your entire knowledge of Japan on anime.
NO, you have NOT seen 'every anime there is'. Are you even aware of how many different series there are? Stop trying to act stuck-up because you saw a lesser-known show. Also, stop acting as if you'll kill each other because people like different things. Lots of people raved about 'Ghost In The Shell'. Personally, I don't like it, and that's okay. I'm sure YOU dislike something that others think is great. On the other hand, stop bashing a particular anime just because it's popular. SO WHAT if lots of people like 'Inu Yasha' or 'Naruto' or 'Pokemon' or whatever? It just means more people will be more likely to check out another series they never heard of before. I don't think that's a bad thing at all.
Anime's great, even though there are a couple minor details I notice, and many, probably most of the fans are cool too, but there's always that percentage that take an interest and become obnoxious.
