American Dreams

I was asked recently at a business lunch, "Why is America destroying the spirit of Capitalism?"

I was dumbfounded, I said, Gee I dunno or something equally brilliant.

As an American Businessperson I am looked to as a leader, just because I am an American. I have instant credibility in most situations. People who work for me are even intimitdated by my Americaness. (It is beginning to give me a complex and it is also isolating. My husband is Filipino so he kinda blends in, but I stick out like a sore thumb.)

People here so envy the American way of life, including the ability of Americans to create, to invent, to innovate better than anyone.

What made us so amazing? What made America the world standard in excellence? These are not just questions, I think we need to ponder what got us to the top.

There has been some anti-capitalist sentiments that have been bantered around. I feel they are misguided. Capitalism itself is not evil or good, it is an economic system. What caused the issues are the people who misused that system, including those individuals that did not think rationally, but instead got caught up in the idea of easy wealth.

Capitalism as a system creates an economic incentive to take risks, to think of new ways to do things, to innovate what exsists now and do all things better, faster, smarter and more profitably. This system has led to the creation of all the marvels we enjoy, they were created so someone might make a buck or two.

The moral issue of good and evil, corruption or greed is something we need to be vigilant about and indeed take action against because it is counter productive as well as immoral. But do we really want to kill the golden goose?

Many, many capitalists are honest, good people who want to accomplish a goal, to realize a dream, or to make people happier.

I get offended by the slurs against our way of life, I have done nothing more immoral than try to create jobs, to create something bigger than myself that can exsist separate from me. I admit a certain amount of my drive to succeed is pure ego, it has less to do with greed than it has to do with accomplishing something that is not easy. But isn't that what made America what is is? The drive to be better to sate our collective ego as a country. To be number one, to know we could out do any other country we just had to get that American know-how out and nothing could stop us.

We should not let our ego dominate our culture, but is that pride something we should abandon?

America's strength comes from the promise of a brighter tommorrow, that anyone can succeed if they try, it is the land of opportunity, of justice, of inspiration. The US has been able to attract the best and the brightest to come to the land of where people are bold, and brave and do things others cannot imagine. Where people get to say what they feel, no matter how silly or deep or misguided or true. America does not stifle ideas, they can grow.

America has gone through pain and change, as with any human creation the country is not perfect and we can always become better. But how do we want to achieve that goal? Do we want to destroy the economic system that helped us become what we are today? Capitalism does need regulation to compensate for human weakness and greed, but capitalism in itself did not create our current state of affairs.

I do not have the answers, but I know we can solve anything we put our minds to, it is our defining attribute.

We are Americans before we are anything else, before we are liberals, conservatives, our race, our gender - we are Americans. That means something in the world. America has won the respect of the entire world; we are a great people. We need to reclaim our spirit, our pride, our identity. The USA is the greatest country on Earth when did we forget that?

It is an honor to be an American; people all over the world envy, respect and look up to you. What we do in this time of crisis is critical to our standing in the eyes of the world. It is not just the responsibilty of our elected officals, it is the responsibilty all of us Americans. Do we unite as generations before have done and correct our mistakes and make our country even better or do we continue to widen the partisan divide? Do we have greater allegiance to our political parties or to our country?

We do not all have to agree on every issue, and we should be able to voice our concerns, but we cannot let us become bitter and disillusioned about our country. (Hey I am married to a registered Democrat, we can still love each other even if we have different politics)

I would never have gotten where I am if I did not have faith in my country. I miss my country, not only because I am away, I miss what I use to feel about my country. I miss knowing that despite any struggles I might have in life, I was one of the extremely fortunate souls to be born an American and there was nothing that I could not achieve as long as I worked hard to get it.

Take heart. The spirit of America is for the most part indomitable. The Demolition party has not been able to break it so far, and a ragtag handful Conservatives have been able to push back hard enough against almost overwhelming odds to keep any major disasters from being enacted. We are getting dinged up a bit, but the rest of the wold understands that theses trends are transitory, and will not last forever.

When I rail against Capitalism I am railing against the greedy stockholders and their CEO's that want instant gratification and profits that quarter.
These CEO's make hostile takeovers of other companies that are often solvent and stable, than gut them, fire the workers, and send the machinery overseas to be operated by workers who slave away for a pittance. This "Globalization" has become the American way of business.
In other countries there are 5, 10 and 50 year plans for the companies. Companies in this country rarely think more than a year ahead. We need to think of the future!
I am really concerned that China, Germany, Japan,Korea, India and all of the other countries will take the lead in the "Green Revolution". They all have substantial government subsidies to help them gain market dominance, yet in America conservatives treat renewables with disdain, and would rather subsidize existing fossil fuel and nuclear development.
31 months ago: Hey Gezabelle, Welcome to America, we need more people like you!

Thank you for an excellent Rant. I would make it a RAVE if I could. Your Rant could not have come at a better time. We are about to experience American Ingenuity at its best. The world is about to make the greatest changes in the history of mankind. Tall order? YES! All of the pieces are in place and the announcement of one of the greatest discoveries of all time will be made on October 21st, 2009. With your permission I would like to post your Rant on Swapsol.com. They have discovered how to react CO2 with H2S there by turning hazardous waste products into valuable raw materials. This process will enable a much more profitable operation of sour gas and sour crude refineries. America IS LEADING GREEN REVOLUTION AND the world in resolving the GHG issues.

We can be Clean, Green, Economical and Environmentally Responsible at the same time.
31 months ago: You certainly have my permission to repost,
I am also going to add you site to my sites to watch.
We can solve this problem we need to put our creative outside the box thinking to the issues and make a change.

Very exciting stuff at swapsol, I can hardly wait! This is Yankee know-how, this is what Americans can do! This will be major, I hope everyone will sit up and take notice.

Also people should look at Sapphire Energy which is creating green crude.

Recently the workers at a Texas Instruments saved their jobs from going overseas by making their building more efficent and cost effective. It was on a great documentary here, I think the BBC was showing it.

There is no task to great, no problem to challenging as long as we have the desire to make it happen. We should be on the cutting edge of solving the world's problems.

Certainly there are bad selfish people, we need to be aware and we need to take action when fraud and abuses happen. Most companies I know most comapnies have a 5-10 plan but it is also hard to plan long term because the world changes so fast.

I came here to save American jobs by being able to compete against people you talk about, India is undercutting so bad is destroying revenue. But by building operations here I can offer quailty at a price that is affordable and keep my higher paid sales and marketing staff in the US, I can also reach a Global market and may be able to expand, creating more US and Philippine jobs. Also the wages I pay here are high to the workers here, so they get a better standard of living. The growth of an arising middle class is only good for the US we will have new markets to sell to, and that is something we need to keep in mind.

The big problem is that the US has lost most of it's domestic manufacturing. About the only thing we make anymore are weapons, and the recent attack in Afghanistan where 8 soldiers were killed showed that our weapons repeatedly jammed. We desperately need to invest in renewables and bring back our manufacturing base.
Here in Eugene we are fortunate to have two new companies starting up. One is Korean that will make solar cells, the other is a Chinese company that will distribute and assemble solar cells from a consortium of 30 different Chinese makers.
Its nice to have jobs here but it would be nicer if they were American companies.
31 months ago: I agree, Altruist. The US has got to reclaim its place as a manufaturing leader. Look into what happened at that Texas Instruments plant. They saved their jobs. Other companies can do the same, the group at TI did the "impossible" and Texas Instruments is now stronger. It was a TV program here, but see what you can dig up, it is just one example of what we can do when we have to we can achieve the "impossible".

Look at the site mentioned above, swapsol.com it is just amazing. Imagine getting all those resources. This is what we need, not just talk, we need to act.

It just fustrates me to no end when I hear another country can make money using our labor but we can't?
China is getting its act together, we owe China so much money. We have no leverage against China and it is very hard to enter China as a market. I for one would like the US to cut up its Bank of China credit card.

It is well known that there is going to be incrediable demand for energy and countries want to be efficient renewable resources. Think of the money to be made if we decided to tackle this not politically but like capitalists, providing superior products to the world.

We need to bring back our strength and not hold ourselves back, the only ones stopping us is us.

Our salvation will not come from "the top down" it comes from the will of the people, we can't wait for a knight in shining armor we have to save ourselves.

Support businesses such as Swapsol, Sapphire Energy get the word out, get behind them; demand that their products be brought to market because you want to buy them.
31 months ago: Send a message, we want investment in American ingenuity, we want capital to stay in the US. A whole bunch of that bail-out went overseas guys, look into it. What could American entrapeneurs done with the money that bought out the auto industry, how many new jobs would be made, new technologies, new exports?

We need to recognize are failures, fix it and move on and be better for it. We don't need big government to take care of it, we need to take care of it. The people need to control of their government. We need to act in the same as when someone loses a job or suffers a set back; the prudent people tighten their belts, cut back on spending and make some sacrifices and focus on making the situation better.

America has to do the same, sure FDR made things better in the New Deal but it was not by a few bail outs, it was a bold plan, a clear vision with capitalism as a foundation. The issues that caused the crisis were examined and understood and we enacted legislation that helped us become a better nation. The Great Depression did not defeat us, it strengthed us.
31 months ago: WOW Gezabelle, you Sound like a power house of energy. At the risk of being crude I am repeating my "Welcome to America, we need more people like you."

Thank you for recognizing the potential of Swapsol.

You have many good thoughts. We may not have gone down the path to where we are now if we had not changed the regulations that FDR had put into place.

I agree we have got to keep capital and jobs in America.

Try this idea on for size. The balance of trade may take on a new twist with Swapsol's solutions being employed world wide. The Royalties and license fees could be astronomical source of trade for the USA.

The 64 trillion dollar question is...... what can we make from this "FREE" new source of high quality high strength carbon materials? Aircraft, boats, cars, storage batteries, sports equipment, Structural substitutes for steel, Electrical and Electronic components. The possibilities are endless. A friend of mine is extremely excited about the economic possibility of building the space elevator.

As for jobs.... I think low cost CLEAN energy combined with plentiful high strength and high quaility carbon fiber materials says it all.

Starting to get the picture?

We can be Clean, Green, Economical and Environmentally Responsible at the same time
31 months ago: Gezabelle, I checked out Sapphire Energy. Impressive 150 mpg rating on their test vehicle.

I have been a proponent of Bio-Algae fuels for some time but I have to be realistic. The problem is the Cost Parity for Bio Fuels without Government Subsidy will soon, IMHO, be harder to obtain. Bio/Algae fuel is believed to have a break even point with crude oil of around $70 a barrel and compition for CO2 will be increasing, thus increasing the break even price. This, and with all of the new sources of oil, NG & NG made from coal/biomass and lower refining cost on the horizon makes it very difficult to make Bio/Algae fuels profitable. Unfortunately it is the same story for Wind, Solar and Hydro Wave & current flow technologies. While I would like to see these power sources make a contribution to our energy needs I believe that they are cost prohibitive luxuries That are reliability deficient.
31 months ago: I agree jon, but what I like about sapphire, more than even the actual concept, is that they are trying to solve the problem from a business approach. No new infrastructure needs to be created and they are trying to make it profitable.

Maybe they will succeed, maybe they will fail but they are taking a capitalist approach.

I am rooting for them because they are doing what Americans do best - dream, and then try to make their dreams happen. I am glad to see the spirit alive.

I really am glad to see business people solving these problems, not waiting for government to solve them for them.

I am looking forward to seeing your progress at Swapsol, you are absolutely right - the potential is huge, this is what we should be focusing on people that have real solutions.

New technology is what keeps America on top, the carbon possibilities are just as much of and opportunity as the process itself. (remember gasoline was intially a by-product of kerosene production)
31 months ago: Gezabelle, Have you heard of Shai Agassi and his plan for a Better Place? I think that you will like what you find. I just revisited his site and noticed this blog. This very interesting posted comment sheds some light about why we have such an uphill battle for EV's.

http://blog.betterplace.com/2009/10/evs-sweet-products-coming-down-the-road/#disqus_thread

It will be very interesting to see how the news media covers Swapsol after they make their first public announcement. Next week will tell us much about IF Swapsol will be treated like EV's & many other good ideas.
