So far this winter has been a difficult one here in North Carolina. It started in December when I walked in my favorite video store ( Visart video had every criterion collection films plus wonderful films from great filmmakers such as Kieslowski, Bergman, Cassavettes, ect...) and saw the sign that said store closing all films on sale. I was stunned because this was the last Visart in town and I am one of the few people that actually like to go look at films and read the back deciding what film I want to watch that day. This is why I do not want to go online and rent. To me it is not the same as actually going in and finding what I want for the day. I asked a Visart employee why? "Why are you closing my favorite store that I love so much?" Waiting for the expected answer "netflix of course". Surprisingly that is not what he told me. He said that netflix and redbox did contribute to the closing of my favorite store but it was really because the landlord jacked the rent up three times what it had been. As I walked over to the empty shelves that still had the names of my favorite filmmakers posted on them but alas all the films were gone or so picked over that there was really nothing there. I thought to myself well things cannot get much worse. Apparently I was wrong Borders is now closing....

15 months ago: Same here Amish - lost a Borders, Waldenbooks, and Blockbuster. The video stores are now red box vending machines at the market with a tiny selection. As for Borders, I can't say I'm surprised. The last time I went to Borders, I asked the manager for a discount on a particular book that was more than double the price of what Amazon was offering it for. I wasn't expecting 50% off but he gave me a terse NO and rudely walked off. That was the last time I went to that store and I switched to using Barnes and Noble.
