ARE AMERICAN IDOL VOTERS DEAF or JUST SHALLOW?

OK. Last night's results on American Idol were incomprehensible. Are Americans deaf? There are only 2 real "artists" in this contest and that's Crystal Bowersox and Michael Lynche. They are the ones consistently fabulous. They are true singers, who deliver every time with passion and feeling. They are the only two who perform each week as if they had their own show and were being paid to entertain and know who they are and what to give their audience. They are so far beyond being "a contestant" in a singing competition. But America votes Michael Lynche off?

So what the heck is going on here? Are the voters so swayed by one negative comment from Simon Cowell that they follow like sheep when the other 3 judges thought Michael was amazing? No, that can't be it or that sweet, young Aaron would have been sent home when all 4 put him down. (Thank heaven they didn't!) So it must be something else that makes voters want to send home one of the two best contestants while they keep "pretty boy", Tim Urban, in the competition.

So then, I can only think there must be a glut of female voters who value looks over talent. Come on folks! Tim Urban can sing. So can I. It stops there! So he's got a nice smile. Needs a haircut bigtime. But singers like him are a dime a dozen. I've seen them in local talent contests. He wouldn't make the quarter-finals! Casey's cute too. Both are marketable from a looks point of view. But at least Casey has some real talent and can sing with passion as he proved singing that "jealous" song. Definitely his best to date.

Don't get me wrong: I don't dislike Tim Urban. Seems like a nice guy. But so what? This isn't about being nice, or good looking. It's about talent ... real talent! Siobhan has talent. So does that other young gal...can't think of her name. Both have great voices. But honestly, Tim isn't even in their league.

Aren't we looking for a new American Idol here? If this were America's Top Model, well then, I could see the votes for looks over talent. But isn't this supposed to be a singing contest? Isn't this a search for the best new voice of 2010?! Well Tim Urban sure isn't that! Even young Aaron has way more to offer. At 16, he has emotion and passion beyond his youthfulness. Singers who can't move you aren't worth listening to in the long run. They'll never sustain an audience or create a "give us more" demand.

Thank heaven the judges utilized the save on Michael. It shouldn't have been necessary to save him. No way should he have been in the bottom three. Next week two will have to go. It's time to get selective. It's time to vote for talent, charisma, the "it" factor that set Adam Lambert, Allison Iraheta, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood apart in the past. Don't make the same mistake this year. Don't send a Chris Daughtry home and keep a pretty face. If Taylor Hicks and even last year's winner ... what was his name? ... is forgotten this quickly, then who will remember Tim Urban than little more than another Sanjaya who overstayed his welcome? Bah!

25 months ago: Not at all. We all have different interests. I happen to be very interested in true talent. I thoroughly enjoy good singers and great entertainers and AI has uncovered some real talent in the past, and on this current show. There's nothing shallow about being interested in talented artists in any discipline.
25 months ago: AI has outlived it's allure. Way to commercialized to be of any interest, to me that is. If they really wanted to find unknown talent there would be talent scouts roaming the country picking the contestants instead of massive tryouts at predetermined locations. There are people at these tryouts that follow from city to city just to tryout over and over until they are picked or run out of money. Also there would be limits as to who could tryout. No more professional singers, no more people from Los Angeles trying out in Dallas and vice versa in other words try out in your own area not someone elses. No age limits. There are more, just can't think of them right now.

25 months ago: I agree AI has outlived its allure. Each year I'm less inclined to watch. I nearly didn't last year but Adam and Allison kept me coming back because they were truly worth watching. This year I watch it if I'm around with nothing much to do. I don't really care who wins but if there's to be a winner, I'd hope it'd be someone with real talent. But if voters ditch a Lynche in favour of an Urban, then this'll be just a sham. You're right that AI has gone beyond serving any use other than to fill the pockets of its advertisers. That said, a Carrie Underwood might still be living on a farm in the backwoods if it hadn't been for AI. Anyone who's ever tried to crack into the Music Industry knows how hard it is without money and contacts. Talent is NOT enough. So as much as AI brings in the dregs and fulfills its real mission of being an interesting TV show (to some) it does uncover talent that'd never have a chance otherwise.

25 months ago: I have always enjoyed watching American Idol. I'm just a 47 year ole Joe, that cant carry a tune. But this year, I gave up the show. The week that Lilly was voted off, that was so wrong. From the begining I felt Lilly and Crystal were the two best female performers hands down. While Big Mike and our boy from Chicago were the two strongest males. But this show is getting over the top ratings and why? You had Paula leave, so you bring in some Ms Ripe Bannana, who is a comic not a singer that is no more qualified than you or I. You have another judge that is wet for a contestant, and a blind man could see it. Then Randy and his pitchey comments all the time. Please find another desciption than pitchey...if I hear that one again I may puke. And Simon, who always says "can I be honest with you".... No please lie, or "you know I like you" I think Simon may only like Simon. He is some times very cruel and rude to these kids. But they keep getting rewarded with high ratings which translates into high cost advertising slots which pays big dollars to these folks getting up there and spouting this drivel. This has now become political and not truely about talent. Its who will bring us the best ratings and not the best talent. At this point Lucy re-runs are more entertaining, but thats just a opinion of a ole 47 year old Joe that can't carry a tune.
