The islands of Japan are very unstable. IO lived in the Tokyo metro area (Yokota AB) for 3 1/2 years. They have 300 measurable quakes A DAY there. Been on the top floor of a 20 story building in the middle of a 5.5 quake. NO way to get down, we just had to ride it out. Gave a new meaning to Jerry Lee Lewis' "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On"! Just sat on the floor - couldn't stay in a chair without a seat belt - and rode it out. Surreal.

Any updates on Hawaii and the west coast of the Americas?
14 months ago: Sorry it's not the first. A 8.9 on the rector, is serious. Imagine a 10.?

14 months ago: Well, it's been 8 hours since I first read this. Been watching Fox News HiDef (Hey! Who would YOU rather watch in HiDef - NBC's Andrea Mitchel, CBS's Katie Couric or Megyn Kelly - or ANY of the female talking heads at Fox?) and looks pretty bad in Japan. Aftershocks slamming the whole island of Honshu. Whole villiages washed away. Nearest airport to the epicenter UNDER WATER!

And our own people not getting away scott free. Makes me glad I live in an area that is VERY geologically stable. As I wrote earlier, I've lived in an earthquake-prone area before. Would NOT voluntarily move to one again. One night while I was stationed in Japan I got tossed out of bed by a sharp but VERY brief quake. Don't like being in an earthquake. Not even a little bit.
14 months ago: I was in Peru in the 1970's, and experienced a 7 on the rector, it sounded like a freight train, the bed slammed into the other side of the hotel room.

Tell me are you in a Tornado free zone? I am in BC but live on high ground. 45 minutes from Vancouver.

There's a shedload of rotational energy in a hurricane and it is not uncommon for one to spawn tornadoes as it disintegrates over land.

I was in Lubbock, Texas in May of 1970 when the storm that stimulated Professor Fujita to create the scale they use to measure tornado intensity. We had an F-5 that night. Actually there was an F-0 earlier (I happened to be on the highway when it touched down) earlier that evening. I was attending college at Lubbock Christian College and we were over 4 miles from where the twister touched down. One of the guys in the dorm was an amateur meteorologist and his cup anemometer on the roof danced on the peg at 120knots for over an hour. The storm consisted of 3 approx. half-mile wide funnels rotating about a common center and created a path of near total destruction a mile wide. It was only on the ground for around 4 miles. The Host Wing Commander at nearby Reese AFB said it would have taken 2 full squadrons of B-52s making 2 runs fully loaded with conventional bombs to do that sort of damage. Hellova fun way to spend finals week 2nd semester.
